Transportation
NEW at UWinnipeg! May 2013
The University of Winnipeg has partnered with Peg City Car Co-op to offer a fleet vehicle on campus!
A carshare allows for access to a car on an as-needed basis while reducing the
heavy costs associated with car ownership. Members of the co-op pay for usage
on an hourly and per kilometre rate. Carsharing
is a practical alternative that helps you meet your transportation needs off
campus while allowing you to commute by transit, cycling, and walking.
To access the vehicles you must first apply to become a member of Peg City Car Co-op. Memberships are available to individuals (staff, faculty, students) as well as to departments. Departments can use the carshare car as a replacement for a company fleet vehicle.
For Departments:
- Departments are able to join the carshare as member. All memberships require a $500 membership fee (refundable). After the deposit, individual drivers are added to the membership account for $25 each.
- Each driver must meet our eligibility criteria, (21 years of age, clean driving record) and a driving abstract will be requested from MPI.
- Departments will receive a monthly invoice, with details of costs broken down according to driver. Drivers also receive a record of their trip by filling out our in-car trip log.
- Booking cars is self-serve and done online. Members have access to all vehicles.

The goals of the University of Winnipeg Sustainable Transportation Policy include encouraging the development and adoption by students, administration, staff and faculty, of modes of transportation that:
- reduce consumption of fossil fuels used for transportation
- reduce the material and resource-use intensity of transportation
- reduce and eventually eliminate discharges of toxic substances, wastes, and pollution, including GHG emissions
- increase equity of access to transportation services
The avenues through which the University attempts to address transportation goals is by facilitating infrastructure development and behaviours over which the University has direct control, and also those areas where it has partial control or can exert influence through education, professional development, awareness-building, or community partnerships.
In 2011/2012, transportation priorities are to:
- Establish travel reduction strategies in conjunction with the introduction of Cisco TelePresence virtual meeting systems at the University.
- Continue to develop transportation data tracking systems.
Since 2005, the University and its Transportation Working Group has:
- Increased availability of indoor bicycle parking for winter cyclists.
- Partnered with the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association to build the UWSA Bike Lab.
- Explored the feasibility of establishing Eco-Pass Program for staff / faculty and, in partnership with the UWSA, a U-Pass for students.
- Begun tracking GHG emissions for reimbursed University travel.
- Supported the development of a concept paper for an Integrated Transit Hub with cycling amenities. The paper was authored by the Institute of Urban Studies and tabled with Transportation Working Group. Architectural design work was carried out in 2009 by PSA Studios.
Get a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live.
