DESCRIPTION
:Gallery 1C03 & Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational
Centre\n\n\n\nare pleased to co-present a double-sited solo exhibition
of new work\n\n\n\nby Brandon-based artist Chris Reid. "I like to
believe I am\n\n\n\ntelling the truth" includes large-scale pastel
drawings, quirky\n\n\n\nre-interpretations of Ukrainian Easter eggs,
and a multi-media\n\n\n\nsculptural installation. Reid's lush visual
narratives\n\n\n\nsimultaneously modernize the Ukrainian and African
folklore characters\n\n\n\nBaba Yaga, Koshchiy and Anansi as well as
present idiosyncratic\n\n\n\nanthropomorphic cats, dolls, bunnies and
bread. All of these figures\n\n\n\nplay out their actions in surreal
Canadian Prairie landscapes and\n\n\n\nunsettling domestic
environments.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor further information, please consult

SUMMARY
:Film Screening - Girl Inside
DESCRIPTION
:Together as part of the international documentary screening
network\n\n\n\nCinema Politica, Gallery 1C03 and the University of
Winnipeg Students’\n\n\n\nAssociation (UWSA) present the film
"Girl Inside" in\n\n\n\nEckhardt-Gramatté Hall on Wednesday, February
15 at 6:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirected by award-winning film maker
Maya Gallus, "Girl\n\n\n\nInside" (Canada, 2007) was selected by the
LGBT* Centre and is\n\n\n\npresented in conjunction with Gender Week
on campus. The film received\n\n\n\na Gemini Award in 2008 for Best
Direction in a Documentary Program.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing
26-year-old Madison during a crucial three years of
her\n\n\n\ntransition from male to female, "Girl Inside" is a
beautiful\n\n\n\nfilm that tracks her emotional, intellectual and
spiritual journey of\n\n\n\nself-discovery that is as important as
– if not more than – the\n\n\n\nphysical journey of hormones
and surgery. Sharing the spotlight is\n\n\n\nVivien, Madison’s
glamorous 80-year-old grandmother, who has taken on\n\n\n\nthe job of
advising her on all things feminine. While Vivien's\n\n\n\nattempts to
school Madison in old-fashioned codes of fashion and\n\n\n\nbehavior
are often hilarious, the juxtaposition of two vastly\n\n\n\ndifferent
experiences of womanhood, from very different
generations,\n\n\n\nraises profound issues about the nature of gender,
femininity and\n\n\n\nsexuality. Sometimes funny, sometimes painful,
this heartwarming\n\n\n\ncoming of age story is both an intimate
portrait and a thoughtful\n\n\n\nexploration of what it means to be a
woman.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom the film’s
website:\n\n\n\n“Quietly fierce and deeply intelligent, Madison's
story is\n\n\n\nenlightening without being preachy, and Madison is a
fantastically\n\n\n\nopen and candid subject.” Now
Magazine\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“A subtle and in-depth
portrayal…Shot over three years in direct\n\n\n\ncinema style and
beautifully structured.”\n\n\n\nLynn Fernie,
DOXA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“GIRL INSIDE gives a frank glimpse into that
last bastion of LGBTG-dom\n\n\n\nto be embraced by the mainstream: the
trans-gendered.” Eye Weekly\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease stay for
discussion after the film with Wade Nelson, faculty\n\n\n\nmember of
the Department of Rhetoric, Writing and Communications at\n\n\n\nThe
University of Winnipeg.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll screenings will be open to
all audiences – everyone is welcome.\n\n\n\nAdmission is free,
but donations to offset the costs of screening the\n\n\n\nfilm are
welcome. Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall is located on the third
floor\n\n\n\nof Centennial Hall at The University of
Winnipeg.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGallery 1C03 and the UWSA wish to thank
Cinema Politica for making it\n\n\n\npossible for us to participate in
this network. We are grateful to the\n\n\n\nCanada Council for the
Arts for generously supporting this
initiative.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION
:Prof. Robert Brandenberger, McGill University\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n"Testing
String Theory with Cosmological Observations?"\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf
superstring theory is the correct theory of the microscopic
world,\n\n\n\nstring theory will be needed to understand the early
evolution of the\n\n\n\nuniverse. I will show that string theoretic
effects may lead to an\n\n\n\nevolution of the very early universe
which is very different from what\n\n\n\nis obtained using
particle-based scenarios. I will focus on\n\n\n\n"string gas
cosmology", one particular stringy picture of\n\n\n\nthe very early
universe. I will demonstrate that this scenario leads\n\n\n\nto an
alternative to inflationary cosmology as a mechanism to
generate\n\n\n\nthe primordial fluctuations which evolve into the
structures we\n\n\n\nobserve today on cosmological scales. This
alternative is consistent\n\n\n\nwith current data, and makes
predictions for future observations by\n\n\n\nmeans of which it can be
distinguished from the inflationary universe\n\n\n\nscenario.

:Art Exhibit - Chris Reid: I like to believe I am telling the truth
DESCRIPTION
:Gallery 1C03 & Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational
Centre\n\n\n\nare pleased to co-present a double-sited solo exhibition
of new work\n\n\n\nby Brandon-based artist Chris Reid. "I like to
believe I am\n\n\n\ntelling the truth" includes large-scale pastel
drawings, quirky\n\n\n\nre-interpretations of Ukrainian Easter eggs,
and a multi-media\n\n\n\nsculptural installation. Reid's lush visual
narratives\n\n\n\nsimultaneously modernize the Ukrainian and African
folklore characters\n\n\n\nBaba Yaga, Koshchiy and Anansi as well as
present idiosyncratic\n\n\n\nanthropomorphic cats, dolls, bunnies and
bread. All of these figures\n\n\n\nplay out their actions in surreal
Canadian Prairie landscapes and\n\n\n\nunsettling domestic
environments.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor further information, please consult

Day 2012 with\n\n\n\nWinnipeg’s FIRST screening of Lynn Hershman
Leeson’s !Women Art\n\n\n\nRevolution, followed by a panel
discussion. Watch the film and join\n\n\n\nlocal\n\n\n\nfeminist
artists Roewan Crowe, Shawna Dempsey, and
Sherry\n\n\n\nFarrell-Racette in a dialogue about women in
art.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is FREE, open to all, and will take
place in\n\n\n\nEckhardt-Gramatté Hall at University of Winnipeg, on
Friday, March 2,\n\n\n\n2012 at 7 PM. For more information about the
event please contact Kim\n\n\n\nHunter at 786-9921 or Jennifer Gibson
at 786-9253. More information\n\n\n\nabout the film can be found at
www.womenartrevolution.com\n\n\n\n____________________________________
________________________\n\n\n\nAbout the Film:\n\n\n\nFor over forty
years, Director Lynn Hershman Leeson has collected\n\n\n\nhundreds of
hours of interviews with visionary artists,
historians,\n\n\n\ncurators and critics who shaped the beliefs and
values of the Feminist\n\n\n\nArt Movement and reveal previously
undocumented strategies used to\n\n\n\npoliticize female artists and
integrate women into art structures.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n!Women Art
Revolution elaborates the relationship of the Feminist
Art\n\n\n\nMovement to the 1960s anti-war and civil rights movements
and explains\n\n\n\nhow historical events, such as the all-male
protest exhibition against\n\n\n\nthe invasion of Cambodia, sparked
the first of many feminist actions\n\n\n\nagainst major cultural
institutions. The film details major\n\n\n\ndevelopments in
women’s art of the 1970s, including the first feminist\n\n\n\nart
education programs, political organizations and
protests,\n\n\n\nalternative art spaces such as the A.I.R. Gallery and
Franklin Furnace\n\n\n\nin New York and the Los Angeles Women’s
Building, publications such as\n\n\n\nChrysalis and Heresies, and
landmark exhibitions, performances, and\n\n\n\ninstallations of public
art that changed the entire direction of art.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNew ways
of thinking about the complexities of gender, race, class,\n\n\n\nand
sexuality evolved. The Guerrilla Girls emerged as the
conscience\n\n\n\nof the art world and held academic institutions,
galleries, and\n\n\n\nmuseums accountable for discrimination
practices. Over time, the\n\n\n\ntenacity and courage of these
pioneering women artists resulted in\n\n\n\nwhat many historians now
feel is the most significant art movement of\n\n\n\nthe late 20th
century.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarrie Brownstein composed an original score
to accompany the film.\n\n\n\nLaurie Anderson, Janis Joplin,
Sleater-Kinney, The Gossip, Erase\n\n\n\nErrata and Tribe 8 are some
of the gifted musicians who contributed to\n\n\n\nour soundtrack.

DESCRIPTION
:Gallery 1C03 & Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational
Centre\n\n\n\nare pleased to co-present a double-sited solo exhibition
of new work\n\n\n\nby Brandon-based artist Chris Reid. "I like to
believe I am\n\n\n\ntelling the truth" includes large-scale pastel
drawings, quirky\n\n\n\nre-interpretations of Ukrainian Easter eggs,
and a multi-media\n\n\n\nsculptural installation. Reid's lush visual
narratives\n\n\n\nsimultaneously modernize the Ukrainian and African
folklore characters\n\n\n\nBaba Yaga, Koshchiy and Anansi as well as
present idiosyncratic\n\n\n\nanthropomorphic cats, dolls, bunnies and
bread. All of these figures\n\n\n\nplay out their actions in surreal
Canadian Prairie landscapes and\n\n\n\nunsettling domestic
environments.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor further information, please consult

compelling.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n “Let’s Talk Land Use:
Perspectives, Practice and Relationship” –\n\n\n\nLinda
Murphy and Cherie Burns, Moon Voices Peer
Mentors.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere has been a lot of attention and much
conflict in relation to the\n\n\n\nissue of Land. With the intention
to raise awareness and shift\n\n\n\nperspectives, “Let’s
Talk Land Use: Perspectives, Practice, and\n\n\n\nRelationship”
is a highly engaging and interactive Learning Circle\n\n\n\nthat will
explore practical and experiential practices that
support\n\n\n\nethical and positive solutions to land-based issues by
building\n\n\n\nmutually respectful collaborative
relationships.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n “Power in Story: Reclaiming
Power One Block at a Time” – Moon\n\n\n\nVoices
Participants\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWomen’s craft work has always been a
vehicle for story-telling. \n\n\n\nQuilts have always been much more
than simply a blanket, and through\n\n\n\neach block or pattern, each
quilt tells a story about the quilters.\n\n\n\nThe Moon Voices Story
Quilt weaves together messages of hope,\n\n\n\nresilience, wisdom and
courage as each block shares a story of\n\n\n\nreclamation of power
despite the challenges that each woman has faced\n\n\n\nin her
journey. Join the circle to experience the power of story,
and\n\n\n\nthe lessons each stitch brings in learning to build
community by\n\n\n\nimagining a collective future while honouring the
individual\n\n\n\ncontributions. (We encourage participants to bring a
piece of sewing,\n\n\n\nknitting, or quilting to work on while they
join in the discussion!)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n “Exploring the Good
Life: Bridging Two Worlds” - Moon
Voices\n\n\n\nGrandmothers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Grandmothers for

people face in learning to walk in two worlds:\n\n\n\nhonouring
connection to culture and tradition while living in a\n\n\n\nsociety
that embraces a value system that is very different.
Explore\n\n\n\nways of coping, share life lessons, and learn how to
incorporate a\n\n\n\nspiritual way of being into each day that fosters
resiliency and\n\n\n\ncreates a supportive bridge that brings the best
of two worlds\n\n\n\ntogether in order to live a good
life.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday March

Forward Together: A Community\n\n\n\nArt Project with Lita Fontaine,
Artist”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGiving voice to the knowledge and
experience all people carry, while\n\n\n\nreflecting on the raised
consciousness we have gained through Moon\n\n\n\nVoices in ACTion,
together we will embark on a creative journey under\n\n\n\nLita
Fontaine’s artistic guidance. Through imagery and
symbols,\n\n\n\ntogether we will visually create a path forward that
honours\n\n\n\nIndigenous women, embraces the strength in difference,
and values the\n\n\n\ncomplexity of inter-connection. As the legacy of
Moon Voices:\n\n\n\nAboriginal Women Reclaiming Our Power, this
community art project will\n\n\n\nspeak to the importance of healing,
Indigenous knowledge and culture,\n\n\n\nreconciliation and
collaboration. Each of us has a responsibility and\n\n\n\nability to
respond to injustice and racism, and to create change\n\n\n\nthrough
learning, growing and mindful action – by joining together
we\n\n\n\ntruly can change the world! (note: please wear clothes you
are\n\n\n\ncomfortable working with paint and other art supplies
in).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4-5 pm: Closing Teachings and Drum Circle.\n\n\n\n
