| Title: | Indegenous Plant Cultivation: Past Present and Future |
| Description: | A workshop exploring three facets of indigenous plant knowledge: from early cultivation and current practices to the incorporation of traditional methods in a globalized world. Dr. Leigh Syms a veteran Canadian archaeologist and former Curator of Archaeology at the Manitoba Museum will discuss the history of horticulture and farming in Canada from archaeological research and interviews with elders. Audrey Logan will speak about plant cultivation as a living tradition, as someone who grows and produces the majority of her own food right here in the city. Audrey will share some of the oral stories and teachings that have been passed down to her and are intertwined with the ethos and practices of traditional gardening. Anna Sigrithur a student at the University of Winnipeg and local food activist will talk about what it means to have indigenous food knowledge in an increasingly globalized world, and how these knowledge systems might fit into a modern economic scheme. Free and open to the public, no registration necessary. |
