Title: Department of Anthropology Visiting Speaker Series Proudly Presents Ivan Roksandic!
Description: Contrary to the customary explanation that the early peopling of Cuba and the Great Antilles consisted of several waves of migrations all of which originated in northeastern South America and followed the chain
of the Lesser and Greater Antilles, the present study attempts to show - based on linguistic examination of the non-Arawakan place names in Western Cuba usually designated as Guanahatabey - that southern Mesoamerica can not be excluded as a potential source of early settlers in Cuba.

Dr. Ivan Roksandic is a broadly trained linguist, with a background in archaeology, epigraphy, comparative literature, and mythopoeia. He obtained his Ph.D. at UBC and he has worked as a translator/interpreter.
At The University of Winnipeg, he has been associated with the Rhetoric, Writing and Communication Department and is currently a member of the Department of Anthropology and the coordinator for the Interdisciplinary Linguistics Program.
