In-Course Scholarships and Awards

University of Winnipeg academic awards (scholarships and prizes) range in value from prizes of $100 to major scholarships of over $10,000. In order to be considered for undergraduate scholarships, you must have completed at least 30 credit hours and must have an overall minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00. You also should note that if you already hold an undergraduate degree you will not be eligible for scholarships unless you are proceeding from a 3-year to a 4-year or Honours degree OR are proceeding to an Education degree.

Regular Undergraduate Scholarship Program Information

Most undergraduate scholarships are awarded without the necessity of students having to apply for them. These include:

Department Scholarships. Information on the academic standing of every student who took a course in a department during the previous year (2010 Spring, 2010-11 Fall/Winter) is sent to the department. This information lists students' overall academic standing, their GPA on courses taken during the previous year, and their GPA on courses in that particular department. Students majoring in the department are specially noted.

Academic Proficiency Scholarships. Assessments for Academic Proficiency Scholarships are done at the completion of the Fall/Winter academic year and the Spring Term for students who have completed their 30th, 60th and 90th credit hour in their first undergraduate degree. In each group of 30 credit hours assessed, there may be no more than 6 credit hours in advanced standing or transfer from another institution. Students are assessed for the Deans' Honour List first (Student of Highest Distinction, Student of Distinction); scholarships are awarded beginning with the student who has the highest academic standing and continuing down the Deans' Honour List until the funds available for Academic Proficiency Scholarships are exhausted. In 2010, the cut-off average was a GPA of 4.10.

General Undergraduate Scholarships. These are scholarships not restricted to any single academic department. Many of them are evaluated automatically by the Awards & Financial Aid Office on the basis of computer calculations of students' academic performance.

Calculations of academic standing, the provision of information to departments, and the preparation of undergraduate scholarship application forms does not begin until late June, after all grades have been approved by the University Senate. Students are sent scholarship offers as assessments are done and nominations are forwarded to the Awards Office. This process begins in June but continues throughout the summer and into the fall. Most undergraduate scholarship offers are sent to students in August and September.
