Awards Offered by External Agencies and Organizations

The following is a list of organizations which offer scholarships and awards that may be of interest to current University of Winnipeg undergraduate and graduate students. Awards with upcoming deadlines will be noted; students are encouraged however, to search for scholarship opportunities year-round.

EDC Business Scholarships

Deadline: January 30, 2012

Export Development Canada (EDC) is offering as many as 30 scholarships, 25 of which recognize exceptional students in the field of international business, finance, or economics. The remaining five scholarships will be awarded to outstanding business students with a focus on environment related studies. An EDC scholarship is worth a $4,000 cash award. Scholarships will be awarded in spring 2012, and issued in autumn 2012 at the start of the academic year.

Soroptimist Foundation of Canada Grants

Deadline: January 31, 2012

The Soroptimist Foundation of Canada annually offers several $7,500 for women graduate students in Canada to assist them with university studies which will qualify them for careers which will improve the quality of women's lives.  The aim is to assist women with financial need to complete their studies leading to careers that will improve the quality of women’s lives.   Examples include but are not limited to: providing services, providing legal counselling and assistance, counselling mature women entering or re-entering the labour market, counselling women in crisis, counselling and training women for non-traditional employment, and positions in women's centres.

City of Winnipeg: Citizens Equity Youth Role Model Awards
2012 CEC Youth Role Model Awards

Deadline date: January 31, 2012

There is the need to celebrate culture and recognize the youth from diverse communities in Winnipeg, towards the effort of building a harmonious, vibrant, multicultural and inclusive society. In this regard, the Citizen Equity Committee of the City of Winnipeg honours young people, who by their contributions have become role models within their respective communities. To mark this event, an Annual Award Ceremony, including entertainment and light refreshments is held every year to honour the future leaders of our City.

Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

Deadline: February 1, 2012

As the name implies, the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award recognizes humanitarian volunteer work. There is no set discipline students must study in order to receive the award, but they must maintain their academic, voluntary and career performance to a satisfactory level.

United Way Youth Leaders in Action Scholarship

Deadline: February 10, 2012

Designed to recognize the contributions of young community leaders and encourage them to keep up the great work. In 2012, four scholarship of $500 each will be awarded to young people under the age of 25 who have made a difference in the community.

The Manitoba Legislative Internship Program

Deadline: February 14, 2012

Gain first-hand experience in the legislative process and work with Members of the Legislative Assembly and their caucuses in policy research.

The Manitoba Legislative Assembly Internship Program is open to six Manitoba students in a degree program in any discipline at a Manitoba university and to permanent Manitoba residents studying outside the province. Students must have graduated by September, 2012.

This award recognizes a woman's outstanding achievements in the expression, performance, development, preservation or patronage of the visual, literary, performing or creative arts.  She may express herself artistically, encourage others to find their own creative expression and/or promote the value of the arts as integral to the life of the community.

Robert E. Oliver Scholarship

Deadline: February 27, 2012

Each year, Advertising Standards Council awards one $1,500 scholarship to a full-time post secondary student who is enrolled in an undergraduate advertising or marketing program at a Canadian university or college.

Robert E. Oliver was ASC’s first president and a pioneer of Canadian advertising self-regulation. He played a key role in developing the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards. To honour his contribution, this award recognizes students with a record of outstanding academic achievement and community service and who are committed to pursuing a career in advertising or marketing.

To apply for this year’s award, the student is asked to contact the program chair or coordinator at your university or college as this award does not have an on-line app on their website.  Here is a scanned copy [PDF] of the form to insert.

RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program

Deadline: February 28th, 2012

Selected students are awarded up to $4,000 each academic year for two to four years to use towards tuition, textbooks, supplies and living expenses.

RBC awards 10 scholarships in two categories:

  • For students majoring in disciplines related to the financial services industry
  • For students majoring in disciplines unrelated to the financial services industry

Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg:
Manitoba Citizens' Bursary Fund for Aboriginal Peoples

Deadline: February 28, 2012

This annual award is open to aboriginal students from UW, UM and BU. You must be a student with Aboriginal ancestry (First Nations, Metis, or Inuit) and demonstrate financial need. Students must maintain satisfactory grades to retain their eligibility. Also points will be given for extra-curricular/volunteer activities.

The applicant must also submit a student history or a transcript with this application form. Bursaries range from $200 to $500 each.

CWRA Scholarships in Water Resources

Deadline: February 28, 2012

1. The Canadian Water Resources Association annually offers five scholarships. These scholarships are available to graduate students whose programs of study focus upon applied, natural, or social science aspects of water resources. The scholarships will have the following values:

  • Dillon Consulting Scholarship - $5,000
    This scholarship will be awarded to the highest ranked of the applicants. Funding is provided by Dillon Consulting Ltd. on an annual basis.
  • Ken Thomson Scholarship - $2,000
    This scholarship will be awarded to the second highest ranked of the applicants. The Ken Thomson Scholarship is awarded from a special fund set up in his honour.
  • CWRA Memorial Scholarship - $1,500
    A tribute to CWRA Members remembered by their colleagues donations to the Scholarship Fund.
  • 2 Scholarships - $1,500 each
    These scholarships are funded from the general funds of the Canadian Water Resources Association.

All applicants will receive a one-year membership in the Canadian Water Resources Association.

2. The scholarships are open either to Canadian citizens or landed immigrants attending a Canadian University or college, who are enrolled in full-time graduate studies in any discipline in both Fall and Winter terms of the 2011 - 2012 academic year.

3. The Scholarship Committee will accept only one applicant from any department in a Canadian university or college. Therefore applicants must provide a statement from the chairman/director of the department which verifies that the application is the one being submitted from that program for the graduate scholarship. This statement must also include confirmation of the applicant’s full-time registration in the program in the Fall and Winter terms of the 2011 - 2012 academic year.

4. The scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of academic excellence and project relevance to water management and development. When applicants are equal on the basis of these criteria, selection will be based on encouraging broad geographic, discipline and career stage representation as well as considering affirmative action for women.

5. Applicants should arrange to have the following material, either in English or French, submitted to the Scholarship Committee:

  • A 500-word statement which outlines the applicant’s research project and its relevance to sustainable water resources. This statement should begin with a concise project title, and should focus on the research methods of the project. It should specify the type of data and analysis and state the expected outcomes (i.e. answer the question 'how?'). The project description should be reader-friendly to non-specialists and contain as little jargon as possible.
  • Official course transcripts at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Two references, to be sent directly to the Scholarship Committee by the referees or appropriate official of the university or college. The references must be received by the Scholarship Committee prior to February 28, 2012.
  • A statement from the program chairman or director endorsing the application from that program, including confirmation of the applicant’s full-time registration in the program in both Fall and Winters terms of the 2011 - 2012 academic year. The endorsement is not a letter of reference and must be attached to the application form.

6. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all the material is sent to the Scholarship Committee in one package, with the exception of references. (Where it is college or university policy not to give official course transcripts directly to the student, this should be noted and arrangements made to have the transcripts forwarded directly to the Scholarship Chairman).

7. Applications will be accepted until February 28, 2012. A decision will be announced in June 2012.

Manitoba NEAHR Program

The Manitoba Network Environment for Aboriginal Health Research (NEAHR) Program seeks to expand the pool of indigenous health researchers and contribute to the development of a sustainable and collaborative research environment for First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities in Manitoba.

CAPI Advancing a National Dialogue Award

The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) is pleased to announce the following Awards program:

"Advancing a National Dialogue" Awards - Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute
The Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI) is an independent, non-partisan policy forum that addresses mid to long-term policy issues of significance to the agri-food sector. CAPI has identified three major themes on which to focus its work: food and wellness, sustainability, and viability.

The Institute is focused on stimulating a national dialogue on agriculture and agri-food issues by addressing the policies that will enable Canada's agri-food sector to thrive in the domestic and global agri-food marketplace. CAPI's objective includes developing policy ideas that provide future options for the framework agreement developed by federal, provincial, and territorial governments, known as Growing Forward.

The Awards Program, "Advancing a National Dialogue," seeks out fresh ideas from graduate students for policies or models that will enhance Canada's competitiveness in the emerging agriculture and agri-food world. This initiative has been made possible through the support of Farm Credit Canada (FCC).

These awards are available to candidates who are studying at the graduate level.

Number of Awards: Three (3).

Value: One award of $10,000 CAD, non-renewable and two awards of $5,000 CAD.

IDRC/CRDI Awards

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC-CRDI) is a Canadian crown corporation that works in close collaboration with researchers from the developing world in their search for the means to build healthier, more equitable and more prosperous societies.
