Workplace Inspections

Purpose/Objectives:
The purpose of inspections includes the following objectives, as part of a comprehensive Safety and Health Program at University of Winnipeg:
  • Identification of health and safety hazards;
  • Development of health and safety standards and procedures as per the minimum requirements of Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulations and where applicable, strive for best practices;
  • Establishment of preventive controls;
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of controls.

Inspections serve to support and improve other elements of the Workplace Safety and Health Program components.  To be effective, they must be performed regularly and be an integral part of a systematic accident/incident prevention program.

Process:

Workplace inspections are done throughout the University of Winnipeg campus.   Inspections are completed in all areas, including offices, classrooms, laboratories, mechanical rooms, storage areas, etc., and are reported on at the quarterly Workplace Safety and Health Committee meetings.  
Schedule:
Inspection schedules are developed in consultation with University Departments.  The Safety Office and a member(s) of Workplace Safety and Health Committee participate in the inspection process.

Completed Reports and Follow Up:

  • Completed reports are reviewed by participants and recorded.  
  • Inspection reports are forwarded by the Safety Office to the Department Head/Dean/Manager/Supervisor(s), as appropriate for their review and action as per recommendations.  
  • Department Head/Dean/Manager/Supervisor(s) will provide a progress report on any action items when requested by the Safety Office.
  • Completed reports are stored by the Safety Office for appropriate follow up. 
  • Follow up with departments may include an email and/or a report; the Safety Office may follow up during a non-routine or routine inspection. 
Reporting:
  • Completed inspections are reported and discussed at planned Workplace Safety and Health Committee meetings
