Our PRIME lab will be fully operational this summer with completion of a $1 million project that includes a floating zone image furnace used to grow high quality crystals (one of only a handful in Canada.) It comes with a 9 Tesla superconducting magnet which can measure the properties of new materials down to almost absolute zero (-273 degrees C). This officially makes UWinnipeg one of the coolest places in Canada to study science.

“New materials define our world, from the electronics inside your iPad to the superconducting magnets inside MRI machines,” said Chemistry Professor Chris Wiebe, Director of the new facility. ‘We now have one of the best materials laboratories in Canada, and this provides wonderful opportunities for faculty and students to make important contributions to society.’”
