In a unique pilot project, four student teachers worked one-on-one with young car thieves who are functionally illiterate, in a program run by Manitoba Justice. The UWinnipeg students began mentoring young male offenders, aged 13 to 19, in October. The goal was to help them read, write, and eventually learn life skills such as resume-writing and interviewing for jobs.
Dr. Ken McCluskey, Dean of Education, is receiving the esteemed Spirit of Crazy Horse Award from Reclaiming Youth International later this month. McCluskey is known internationally for his work in gifted education, mentoring, and at-risk children and youth. His Lost Prizes and related projects serve as models world-wide for those interested in identifying and developing the talents of marginalized young people.
