Dr. Scott Forbes

Dr. Scott Forbes is creating organic fish fertilizer and testing it inside the greenhouse atop the Richardson College for the Environment. Manitoba has abundant fish resources — in particular invasive European carp, an ecologically destructive species — for which there are no commercial markets. By converting fishery waste and rough fish to organic fertilizer, we can help solve an ecological problem and develop an eco-friendly fertilizer for the rapidly growing organic farming sector. It can also create new jobs for people in rural and Northern communities. Dr. Forbes is working in collaboration with the Fisher River Cree Nation on this project.
