University of Winnipeg Report to the Community 2012

Faculty of Kinesiology

David FitzpatrickEffective July 1, 2012, we launch our new Faculty of Kinesiology with Dr. David Fitzpatrick as the Acting Dean.

Kinesiology is the study of movement. Graduates work in the school system, with amateur or professional sport teams, in private business, with health and fitness related agencies, in child care settings, and in community sport, fitness, and physical recreation programs.

Building on the strengths of our current Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health, and the Department of Athletics, we are creating new research and academic opportunities for students, including development of new Master’s degrees in Coaching and Athletic Therapy.

A newly created Institute for Youth and Sport will allow academic researchers to focus on recreational activities and sport with particular emphasis on issues affecting inner city youth. Fitzpatrick believes action-research connects the University  with pressing issues in the community, such as evidence-based research on sport concussions that can lead to better awareness, treatment, and prevention.

KinesiologyBy next year, UWinnipeg Kinesiology students will also have a new state-of-the-art facility on campus.
