Researcher Profiles
Trevor Vincent
Trevor Vincent, science student, 4th year Physics
Briefly describe the professor and research project you are working with.
I am working under Dr. Melanie Martin within the field of Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Dr. Melanie Martin is fun to work with and is always very supportive. My current project involves developing computer code that controls the Magnetic Resonance Imaging system at Dr. Martin’s lab.
Why do you want to do this kind of research?
Diffusion MRI is an exciting and relatively new field that could lead to important new non-invasive diagnostic techniques for a myriad of medical diseases. The challenge of understanding and hopefully contributing to this complex and exciting field is what motivates me.
How do you think this research benefits you in developing your skills and abilities?
First and foremost, the research has taken my computer literacy to a new level. I have developed Monte Carlo simulations and medical image analysis programs in a variety of computer languages as well as 3d animations and presentations. Beyond this, Dr.Martin’s research has required me to read and digest many scientific papers, a skill which is not usually developed in undergraduate classes.
What is the best part, or what has surprised you in doing this research?
I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw my name as one of the coauthors on a published scientific paper. As an undergraduate, I was used to thinking that much more advanced people were only capable of being on research papers.
What would you say to students thinking about attending UWinnipeg regarding research opportunities here?
The University of Winnipeg has a great physics faculty and there are many available summer research jobs for interested students. These jobs really get you interested in scientific endeavors.
What are your personal goals, how do you hope to use your education down the road?
I hope to eventually finish a PhD in physics. Due to my experience at the University of Winnipeg in the summer, I feel more confident that I can obtain this goal.
