Briefly describe the professor and research project you are working with.

I am working with Dr. Jeremy Frimer who is doing some fascinating research on moral leaders. He is interested in what makes these individuals  stand out and how the average person reacts to them. My research project is concerned with the impressions we have of the people in our lives who do good things. I am interested in the idea that these impressions may change depending on if these helping behaviours are done in ways that are highly visible to others.

Why do you want to do this kind of research?

I am  intrigued to understand what motivates human behaviour.  Research in psychology is a tool that helps me gain a better understanding, and formulate conclusions of what these motivating factors are. I believe a better understanding toward our impressions of others is invaluable. These impressions are particularly significant when considering good people. This research can pave the way for fostering and building up those who society considers to be “good people.” I feel very fortunate to be part of such interesting and important work.

How do you think this research benefits you in developing your skills and abilities?

This research has given me the opportunity to apply the knowledge from my classes in a way that can add to psychological literature. Data analysis and research methods are no longer print in a textbook. I have been able to expand my abilities with respect to working in a group, giving presentations, and critical thinking. I'm confident that I'll be well equipped for graduate level research.

What is the best part, or what has surprised you in doing this research?

The best part about this research has been the opportunity to be involved in a project on a topic that is truly important to me. I've had the chance to think about people and morality in ways that I may never have otherwise considered. I have also been able to meet and work alongside great people who are motivated to do truly inspiring research. I was intrigued with the process of coming up with a research idea and the methods to measure it. I had never before taken the time to consider how this would look.

What would you say to students thinking about attending UWinnipeg regarding research opportunities here?

The opportunities seem endless. No matter what the research interest I am confident that any student will be able to find a project that motivates them to become involved. A smaller undergraduate university gives its students a great opportunity to get to know professors on closer levels, and to be part of many interesting research projects that are changing our world today.

What are your personal goals, how do you hope to use your education down the road?

I plan to continue on to graduate level study and research. I hope to be admitted to a masters program that allows me to integrate research and clinical practice.

I hope to use my education to assist and touch lives in a significant way. I want to have the opportunity to teach others how to do the same.  My overall goal is to make a positive impact on the world around me.
