Answering the call of the north, Brittany Shuwera traveled to Yellowknife, NWT, to study the dynamic nature of “sense of place.” Through interviews, photovoice (participants expressing sense of place through images), literature reviews, and participant observation, she collected historical data on how the community and the resident’s perspectives changed over the past twenty years. By sharing stories and discussing what they felt to be important attributes of Yellowknife, participants were able to convey their dynamic sense of place in a meaningful way. This temporal vantage point is a unique way of understanding sense of place in the contemporary north.
