Sandra Kirby, Ph.D.
Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies

As Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies, my tasks are to foster and sustain topquality research and scholarship; to provide outstanding research support services to enable faculty to excel in the creation of new knowledge; to support the highest standards of integrity in research; to assist faculty, students and the community to identify beneficial applications for the research, and to develop a small number of top quality niche graduate studies programs with excellent graduate researchers. Over the past two years, we have expanded intra- and inter-institutional research collaboration; focused our granting attention on infrastructure improvements and support for new facilities, and focused on for example, research areas involving communications technology and sustainability. Central to our work is a good, proactive staff which provides service to investigators and ensures that they achieve full regulatory compliance. Communication between staff and researchers is critical to allow key ideas to be developed into full research programs.

The Research Office serves the University community and the public at large by being a central authority for high standards for research activity. For example, the Research Office offers a full spectrum of activities for enhancing research projects and processes. It also regards the teaching–research relationship as essential for promoting the University’s research success. It establishes benchmarks for research evaluation to maximize the value received from resources invested. The University of Winnipeg is in an exciting phase of research development with a number of expansions including the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex and the enhanced communications technologies. Researchers and students alike are finding themselves in a window of extraordinary opportunity. Faculty are energized and dedicated; undergraduate, graduate, and professional students are academically strong and making their marks on the world. I hope you enjoy reading about some of our researchers and share with them, some of the excitement created by the emergence of new ideas.
