Tropical ecology is complex and the study of hydrology is critical to understanding and sustaining many tropical areas. Patrick Friesen recently spent four months in the astounding biodiversity of Panama’s tropical rainforests, exploring how different types of vegetation partition and intercept rainfall. Now expert in the use of a machete and with a deeper appreciation for the indigenous species of the area from his experiences, Friesen is confident the results of his observations and data collection will contribute to the current base of knowledge. He expects to pursue further graduate studies in botany, particularly in the field of plant physiology.
