Rachel Twigg Boyce is studying a series of sermons written about poverty by the Cappadocian Fathers in the fourth century, a time when the Christendom was in its infancy and the ramifications of this new power and wealth was in question. That period is in opposition to North America today, where the increasingly de-institutionalized church raises questions on what it means to lose a once held place of privilege. One of the first women to serve as a pastor in the Mennonite Brethren tradition, Rev. Twigg-Boyce is also breaking new ground in her thesis, combining classical theology with social critical theory, performance theory and rhetoric, a common form used by the Cappadocians. She currently works for Mennonite Brethren Church developing new initiatives to connect the inner city poor with adequate resources and support.
