Welcome

Dr. Alaa S. Abd-El-Aziz

(Research, International & External Affairs)

The University of Winnipeg has a long-standing reputation for providing a post-secondary education that is excellent, accessible, and well-rounded, of which research plays an integral role.

Many of our award-winning faculty are well-known researchers, engaged in the pursuit of knowledge and its many applications in the classroom and beyond, dedicated to training the next generation.

The involvement of our undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral students, and research associates creates a dynamic environment where research flourishes. Indeed a unique feature that sets Winnipeg’s downtown university apart is the opportunity our undergraduate students receive—under the mentorship of highly respected researchers—to participate in research that, at other larger universities, is reserved for graduate students.

This valuable opportunity at the undergraduate level, in combination with internal and external awards, is one of the many reasons our students excel and advance to higher levels of education and research.

Research at UWinnipeg is diverse and is undertaken in Arts, Science, Education, Theology, and Marriage & Family Therapy. Our researchers are engaged in work that ranges from the impact of infectious diseases to the development of new materials, from the histories hidden in our forests to the deep-rooted genetic conflicts that lurk beneath parent-offspring relations. Researchers here investigate how boys learn, bring to light the often invisible work of mothering, and uncover the intricacies of computer networks and governmental systems. They delve into the mysteries of Mars and discover how Aboriginal culture impacts education. And research at UWinnipeg looks into issues as disparate as how to prevent sports injuries and the history and development of Manitoba’s Francophonie. Research here is a growing, evolving, and interdisciplinary endeavour impacting every facet of the UWinnipeg experience.

By featuring the work of but a few of our many outstanding researchers, Research 2006 gives a sense of the dynamic and transformative research environment at The University of Winnipeg. Research at UWinnipeg has impacted public health, the environment, our educational system, marginalized peoples around the world, and the revitalization of Canada’s urban centres. Ultimately, individuals and communities locally and around the world, benefit from work begun in labs, classrooms, and offices across The University of Winnipeg campus.

Join us in the search for knowledge and the pursuit of new opportunities.
