Eco-Kids Graduate
Forty inner-city children received certificates of completion
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Friday, June 27, 2008
WINNIPEG, MB – A very special graduation involving
forty inner-city school children took place at The University of Winnipeg on Friday,
June 27. The Grade 6 children from Strathcona Elementary School received certificates
for completing the first Eco-Kids on Campus program, which saw them study science
and experiment in UWinnipeg labs.
Several
UWinnipeg and Collegiate professors spent two hours every Wednesday over four
months fostering a love of science in the children in the unique Eco-Kids
program which is coordinated through UWinnipeg’s Innovative Learning Centre.
The 40 children
will now be registered in the Opportunity Fund, allowing them to “earn and
learn” tuition credits. For each school year they complete they will have
tuition credits “banked” in their name that can be used to attend UWinnipeg.
The
Innovative Learning Centre reaches out to elementary, secondary and
postsecondary Aboriginal and inner-city students and encourages and supports
them so that they stay in school.
The centre offers after-school, weekend and summer camp activities – such as
the Eco-Kids and Enviro Techs programs – that keep students interested in
learning and motivated to stay in school. Last week, Manitoba Hydro awarded the
Innovative Learning Centre its Spirit of the Earth Award to recognize its
positive impact in the community.
