Registration
Prerequisite Waivers, Department Approvals & Granted Petitions
Prerequisite Waivers
If you do not
meet the prerequisite requirement, but still wish to take the course, you can
request a prerequisite waiver from the department chair, the course instructor
(or designate).
For details, see Permission Contact Information [PDF]
If a prerequisite waiver is granted, the chair or the instructor will send an
email to Registration and you will be registered into the course, if space
permits. Otherwise, you will be placed onto the course wait list. If you are placed on the wait list please
check your “Manage My Waitlist,” in WebAdvisor, to see your placement or rank
on the course section's wait list. For more information, please see the Wait List Process
You can check to
see if you are registered or placed onto the wait list by logging into your
WebAdvisor account and then clicking on Register/Drop Course Sections (to see the courses you are currently registered in) or Manage My Waitlist (to see the courses wait-listed as well as the position/rank on the wait list).
Note: Students who transfer from another institution may receive a standing grade “S” on their prerequisite course and any course with a standing grade “S” is not recognized in WebAdvisor. In this situation please call 204.779.UWIN (8946) or the Registration Officer 204.786.9791 for assistance.
IF YOU ARE ON A WAIT LIST: Check your University Webmail daily. If a seat becomes available, you will receive an email notification providing instructions on how to claim your seat. You MUST go in-person to Student Central with this email message and have one of the staff register you into the class. (The prerequisite waiver from the department or instructor does not allow you to override your registration in WebAdvisor. Prerequisite waiver overrides can only be done by a staff member at Student Central.)
Important Notes:
- In WebAdvisor, if you do not have the course prerequisite, you will not be permitted to register for that course.
- It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all prerequisite requirements are met prior to registering for their courses.
- Some courses require a minimum grade of C or C+ in the prerequisite course in order to register.
- Registration in a course in an upcoming term may be contingent upon a passing grade in a prerequisite course from the previous term. However, since grades from the previous term may not be finalized when the upcoming term begins, acceptance in the course will be given, but it will be provisional.
Departmental Approval
NOTE: "Petition" = "Permission" – these two words have the same meaning.
Some courses have an additional requirement that will ask the student to obtain either Permission of the Department Chair (or designate) or Permission of the Instructor. The message you will see in WebAdvisor is: “XXXX-9999 – A Granted Petition is required for registration in XXXX–9999–000.”
This requirement can be found in the Section Information screen which will appear once you click the highlighted course section number and course title in the Section Name and Title column in the Section Selection Results screen. Please see the Department Chair, Instructor or designate for written permission.
For details on making a request, see Permission Contact Information [PDF]
If you are granted permission/approved, to take the course from either the
Department Chair (or designate) or the Instructor (or in some cases it asks for
both), then an email from the department will be sent to Registration. The
email that provides you with approval to take the course will be added to your
student record. Once it is added to your
record, a Registration representative will either phone or email you to let you
know that it is now okay for you to register.
Note: All emails will be sent to your University Webmail account.
Granted Petitions or Permissions for Modern Language Courses
If you are registering in your first language class (e.g., French, German, Spanish), you should contact the language department advisor to ensure you are placed at the right level.
To contact the language department advisor, see Permission Contact Information [PDF]
