Jan Stewart


Jan Stewart, M.Ed., has over 15 years experience working as a teacher and school counselor at all educational levels, from kindergarten to Grade 12. She is currently completing her PhD in Educational Administration at The University of Manitoba, and has recently been awarded the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship Award and The University of Manitoba Students’ Union Scholarship.

She is presently teaching in The Faculty of Education at The University of Winnipeg and she is the President of The Manitoba School Counsellors’ Association. Jan has conducted numerous seminars at national and international conferences, specializing in the development of creative and interactive counselling tools that are easily implemented in any classroom or counselling program. Jan has taught courses for The University for Winnipeg, as well as graduate courses in counselling at the University of Manitoba for several years.

She is the author of three well-known programs: The STARS Program (1998), a series of interactive workbooks to teach specific skills to middle-years students; The Tough Stuff Series (2000), and activity-based approach to help adolescents cope with real-life problems and issues, and The Anger Workout Book for Teens (2002), a comprehensive anger management program. n with the University of Winnipeg. She has a doctorate degree in Adult Education and Applied Psychology from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of The University of Toronto.

Her master's degree is in Educational Psychology from the University of Manitoba. She taught English and Psychology for 24 years with the Winnipeg School Division. She has also taught certificate and graduate courses in Adult Learning and Literacy Education at the University of Manitoba.

In addition to her teaching experience in Manitoba, Karen has taught in Vancouver, London, England, and San Antonio, Texas. Her research interests are in the psychology of teaching and learning, literacy education, and transformational learning.
