OmniTRAX/Broe Quest Series

Almaz Negash

When Almaz Negash was 14 years old, she spent a month walking from her hometown of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia into Nairobi, Kenya. Upon her arrival in Kenya, she spent 10 years - spanning her entire teenaged life and into her young adulthood - largely languishing in the Thika and Kakuma refugee camps. In May 2002, she was sponsored by a friend with the help of St. Matthew's Maryland Church and arrived in Canada. After only two weeks in Winnipeg, she got a job in the foodservice industry and began volunteering at the Needs Centre for War Affected Families, where she now works as an activity worker in the family program. Almaz hopes to become a social worker so she can help other young refugees.
