Michael Nuul Mayen

My name is Michael Nuul Mayen. I am the founder of the African Student Association of University of Winnipeg and the current president as well. In addition to this I am also the Global Action Coordinator of Menno Simons College or (MSCSA). I have been involved in many organizations in Manitoba such as Treasurer of the Lost Boys &Girls of Sudan and the social organizer in the Sudanese Youth Association.

As well, I am one of the key people in Political Participation in the African, Black, and the Caribbean Communities of Manitoba. I proposed the formation of the UWSA Security Committee, which was passed on April 23, 2005.

Currently I am working as a Research Assistant on War Affect Children (WAC). The project is dealing with WAC in Sudan as well as other nations where children are suffering. I worked with a team on the development of the Meeth CiMaar/ Lost childhood repository, which is a collection of digital resources dealing with the subject of War Affected Children.

As a student atTthe University of Winnipeg my major is International Development Studies (IDS). I myself am one of the Lost Boys and Girls of Sudan, who left Sudan in the 1980s as a refugee in Ethiopia and Kenya. On my journey I walked thousands of miles on foot. I have survived many dangerous situations on my passage through refugee camps in Eastern African countries.

I have been involved in refugee programs at the International Centre and been involved in welcoming new refugees here in Winnipeg. Having lived through the trials of being a refugee I feel the need to share my experiences with others here in Canada. Since my arrival in Winnipeg, I have provided a helping hand to most of the refugees who have emigrated from Sudan. I engage in these activities at the International Centre as a volunteer at the language Bank as an interpreter or translator in Dinka/Arabic to English. I have received my certificate as an interpreter.
