Dr. Mark Golden

Professor of Classics, University of Winnipeg

Title: Changes and Challenges in the History of Childhood

It is often said that childhood is a modern invention and/or that parents in traditional and high mortality populations didn't feel the (frequent) loss of their children as deeply as we do.

I will briefly argue that neither belief is correct. I will then point out an area where our own practices and attitudes require more thought: our failure to extend democratic rights to children.

Bio: Dr. Mark Golden was born in Winnipeg, raised on Ottawa, and earned a PhD in Classics from the University of Toronto in 1981.
