Dr. Myriam Denov, PhD
Myriam Denov is currently the Assistant Professor for the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa.
Myriam Denov holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge where she was a Commonwealth Scholar and winner of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Award. She is presently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa, Canada.
Denov has conducted extensive research on children, particularly in the areas of children and armed conflict, child sexual abuse, and children’s rights.
Her current research focuses on the effects of war and political violence on children, as well as the problem of child soldiers.
Most recently, she was the principal investigator on a project funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) that has explored the issue of former child soldiers in Sierra Leone. The project has examined the long-term effects of children’s involvement in armed conflict as victims, perpetrators or both, as well as the rehabilitation needs of child soldiers following demobilization.
Some of her recent publications include: “‘I Didn’t Want to Die So I Joined Them’: Structuration and the Process of Becoming Boy Soldiers in Sierra Leone” (Journal of Terrorism and Political Violence), and “Engaging the Voices of Girls in the Aftermath of Sierra Leone’s Conflict: Experiences and Perspectives in a Culture of Violence” (Anthropologica).
