Politics

The systematic study of politics can help us to both explain and understand many of the important processes and institutions that affect our lives.

Politics is a fundamental aspect of all organized societies. Whether we are conscious of it or not, politics affects our lives on a daily basis, in a vast number of ways and at different levels – local, national, regional, and global. Its effects are so widespread that we can hardly hope to understand what goes on in our society – or any other society in the world – without some understanding of its politics.

The study of politics examines how power and authority are mobilized, organized, and exercised, and how historical, ideological and economic forces shape our lives. It considers such problems as relations between nation-states as well as between the state and society, the nature of power and authority, and the impact of such things as political parties, interest groups, social classes and other societal organizations. The study of politics can help us to understand many of the important processes and institutions that affect our lives.

Politics faculty at The University of Winnipeg are committed to high quality instruction and mentoring interaction with our students. You can choose from a wide variety of courses within the following five streams: Global Politics; Political Thought; Law, Public Administration, and Public Policy; Canadian and Comparative Politics; City and Community Politics.

The undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor of Arts (3-year, 4-year, or Honours).
