Purpose of the CanTEST
The CanTEST is a standardized English proficiency test used to determine if you are able to meet admission requirements of Canadian post-secondary institutions or fluency requirements of professional licensing associations. The scores will also give you some idea of how much additional English language training you may need.
Description of the CanTEST
The CanTEST measures four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Scores are reported in each of the four areas using a "band system".
Registration for the CanTEST
There are several registration options for the Official CanTEST.
Please note - It is up to the candidate to check with his/her program of study to determine which sections of the test are required for admissions. You may need Basic only, or Basic + Speaking. Please check your faculty admissions criteria.
- Basic CanTEST : Listening, Reading and Writing ($120.00 )
- Listening, Reading and Writing (Basic) plus Speaking ($180.00)
- Speaking Test (only) ($60.00 )
- Writing (re-test only) ($60.00 )

- Applications received after the registration deadline are subject to a $10.00 late registration fee.
- NO applications will be accepted after (TBA)

- Photo Identification must be government issued,clearly stating your name and date of birth. (Passport, Permanent Resident Card, Driver's License etc).
- University or College student ID cards will not be accepted as they do not state your date of birth.

9:00-9:50 am: WRITING
9:50-10:00 am: Break
10:00-11:10 am: READING (Skim
& Scan and Reading)
11:10-11:20 am: Break
11:20 am-12:30 pm: LISTENING
12:30-1:00 pm: Break
1:00- 4:00 pm: ORAL INTERVIEWS
- No cell phones, dictionaries, or translators are allowed in the test room
- Latecomers to the test will not be seated
- Paper will be supplied by The University of Winnipeg
- Please bring several pencils with erasers to use for the test
- Bottled drinks are allowed during the test
Information About Test Results
- Participant results will be processed and mailed within 10 business days of the test date. ( Date of receipt is subject to Canada Post). It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure that contact information provided at the time of registration is current and accurate.
- Scores cannot be released verbally, by email, or by phone under any circumstances.
- Unofficial results are automatically sent to The University of Winnipeg International Office and The University of Manitoba English Language Centre.
- To send an OFFICIAL SCORE REPORT to any specific faculty at The University of Winnipeg, The University of Manitoba, or any other institution you must complete a Request for Official Score Report form.
- The cost is $15.00 per request.
