Backgrounder Cisco and UWin Create

Science Complex and Richardson College for the Environment

  •  UWinnipeg's new Science Complex and Richardson College for the Environment, slated for completion spring 2010, will be a catalyst for cutting-edge innovation, research and development, and product incubation and commercialization.

  • By enhancing scientific research, it will attract world-class experts to the university and to Manitoba to engage in research and dialogue in key areas of specialty including the global north, urban ecology, water stewardship, “green chemistry,” and indigenous science.

  • UWinnipeg science students and researchers will have access to state-of-the-art labs and technology to excel in their chosen fields of study.

  • It will use collaborative technologies for enhancing environmentally sustainable communication and interaction with partners in the region, across the country and around the world.

UWin CREATE

  •  The University of Winnipeg Commercialization Research and Education Alliance for Science, Technology and the Environment (UWin CREATE) will be a key strategic feature of the Science Complex and Richardson College for the Environment.

  • UWin CREATE will foster community-based innovation and economic development in the environmental sciences and technologies. It will focus on creating and using advanced networking technology to reduce the carbon-footprint of its partners and serve as a model for others.

  • The key partners are UWinnipeg, Brandon University and the University College of the North. Other private and public sector partners, both small and large, will contribute by providing innovative technologies supporting environmental research.

  • UWin CREATE will train graduate students and industry participants in applied sciences focused on the urban environment, helping to ensure a highly skilled workforce for Manitoba's environmental industry.

  • UWinnipeg professors will use these facilities for applied research to create and demonstrate new intellectual property, which will be commercialized through a UWin CREATE Technology Transfer office. This facility will become a key component of UWinnipeg's Masters of Science in Applied Computer Science and Society, and Masters of Science in Bioscience, Technology and Public Policy.

Cisco Innovation Centre for Collaboration Technologies

Cisco Innovation Centre for Collaboration Technologies includes:

  • a world-class Cisco TelePresence system;
  • Cisco Unified Communications and integrated WebEx tools; and
  • the endowed Cisco Chair for Collaborative Technology

Cisco TelePresence creates a live, face-to-face communication experience over the network that empowers collaboration like never before. Cisco TelePresence helps people meet, share content, create high-quality video recordings and events, consult with experts and deliver powerful personalized services, all using the power of the network for an immersive in-person experience.

The Cisco Innovation Centre for Collaboration Technologies is housed within the UWin CREATE project. In its first phase it will be Manitoba oriented, but it will ultimately link UWinnipeg to a global network of collaborators. The Cisco Innovation Centre for Collaboration Technologies (Cisco TelePresence, Cisco Unified Communications and integrated WebEx tools, and Research Chair) will be used by UWin CREATE to carry out this collaboration and enable its research.

The Innovation Centre will create a built-in research project examining the impact of such technology on collaboration and changes in the educational and work experience.  The network will enable Manitoba students and researchers to have at their disposal a very high capacity, high-speed data and voice network along with video-conferencing suites that will enable them to take the lead in collaborative projects with colleagues throughout the world.
