Attas' academic background is in analytical chemistry and radiochemistry, as well as archaeology. His work experience strays into spectroscopy, imaging, nuclear safeguards, and quality assurance. The field that has caused him to link with The University of Winnipeg as an adjunct professor in the Chemistry department is the investigation of works of art using light. He  works with Ed Cloutis, Doug Goltz, and Claudine Majzels in this area, as part of a group called C-SCAPE.
