2012-2013 Kinesiology Award Winners [PDF]

The following is a list of scholarships available to students in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health.  Some scholarships are selected by our awards committee and others require that students make an application.

Students are encouraged to become familiar with the terms of each scholarship so that they can strive to meet the criteria for selection.  The selection committee is happy to receive inquiries for the various scholarships and even to provide background information that the selection committee may want to consider as part of their deliberations including extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, other awards, future plans etc.

Thomas J.Kendall Award

* Selected by the Departmental Awards Committee

The THOMAS J. KENDALL AWARD was instituted in recognition of his tremendous contribution to academic, administrative and athletic programs in the Department of Physical Activity and Sport Studies at The University of Winnipeg..  He was an instructor in the department, coach of the Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Basketball team and coordinator of the Physical Activity and Sport Studies program.  This award will be presented annually to the member of an intercollegiate team with the highest academic standing. 
   
Established:  July 21, 1995

Terms of Reference:

1.    The award is presented to an intercollegiate team member (athlete, manager, student therapist) with highest academic standing in the year. 
2.    The award will be presented as part of the Annual Athletic Awards Banquet (March of each year). 
3.    The award will be based on the highest academic standing in the previous year.
4.    The recipient must be a full time student (taking at least 3 FCE).
5.    If consideration of GPA does not result in a clear winner then interest in or contribution to sport administration will be the deciding factor. 
6.    A student may only win this award once.
7.    Selections are made by the Departmental Awards committee.

The Dr. Henry Woltman Award in Kinesiology and Applied Health

This Scholarship is provided by the Erica and Rogers Fund for Academic Excellence.  It will be awarded annually to the most promising student entering the final year of the Kinesiology and Applied Health major.

Conditions

1.    Must be pursuing a first undergraduate degree unless you are moving from a three year degree to a four year degree or you are pursuing an education degree.

2.    Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the university of Winnipeg

3.    Up to 18 hours may be included in the calculation and eligibility for undergraduate awards among credits transferred in, obtained as a visiting student elsewhere, and obtained through challenge examinations.

4.    To be eligible for departmental awards, normally:
a.    A First Year student must have completed 30 credit hours with at least 6 credit hours in the major.
b.    A Second Year student must have completed 30 credit hours with at least 18 credit hours in the major.
c.    A Third Year student must have completed 60 credit hours with at least 30credit hours in the major.
d.    In order to qualify for any departmental awards, a student MUST  be on record with the Records Office as having declared a major in the department concerned.
e.    All students must have a Grade Point Average of at least 3.00 on all courses in the Major and on the last 30 credit hours completed.

The Minute Maid Inner City Leadership Scholarship

Entrance Scholarship Application is due by March 1st

Two $5000 Scholarships

These scholarships were established to support students entering their first year of undergraduate study at The University of Winnipeg who are planning to study Kinesiology and Applied Health.

Conditions:

1.    Students must have a minimum high school admission average of 75%

2.    Graduating from an inner-city high school in the City of Winnipeg.


3.     Applicants must have exceptional involvement within their community or high school, demonstrating leadership with athletic and/or coaching programs and services for the inner-city.
 
4.    Preference will be given to Aboriginal, new immigrant or students from low income families.

Manitoba Blue Cross Opportunity Fund

Two $2500 Scholarships

These bursaries, established by Manitoba Blue Cross, will be given to full-time undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate financial need.

Preference will be given to students who are pursuing a degree through the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health, with a focus on the teaching of physical education; sport coaching; youth sport development; or fitness, health and wellness, in particular as it relates to programming for inner-city children and youth.

These bursaries are part of The University of Winnipeg’s Opportunity Fund, which helps to ensure that everyone, regardless of background and socioeconomic status, has access to higher education and opportunities.

Dick LaPage Scholarship - University of Winnipeg

Sponsored by the Manitoba Physical Education Teachers Association

Spirit of the award:  To support the academic studies of a student who demonstrates a commitment and promise to the teaching of physical education in the school system.  The award will be made directly to the University of Winnipeg to help offset tuition costs.

Award # 1:  Fourth Year Student

Award: $200.00 plus Plaque

Eligible Criteria:

1.    Registered with the University of Winnipeg
2.     Completed third year of Integrated BA/BEd with declared interest in Kinesiology
3.    or completed a three or four year degree in Kinesiology and a declared major in BA/BSc – Kinesiology and accepted to the Faculty of Education after degree program.
4.    Cumulative GPA

Award # 2: Final (Fifth) Year Student

Award: $200.00 plus Plaque

Eligible Criteria:

1.    Registered with the University of Winnipeg

Physical and Health Education Canada

* Selected by the Departmental Awards Committee*

The PHE Canada Student Award recognizes outstanding undergraduate student leadership in the field of physical and health education. Each Canadian university offering a degree in physical education or a related discipline can present the award. Presentation of the award varies, and is left to the discretion of the University.

Distinguished recipients receive the following:

1.    An award certificate;
2.    A 1-year enhanced student membership to PHE Canada ($50 value), and
3.    Recipients will be invited to attend the PHE Canada Student Leadership Conference.
4.    The Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health will support the winner of the award for travel to the PHE Canada Student leadership Conference up to $250.00
5.    The recipient is also eligible to apply to the Manitoba Physical Education Teachers Association (MPETA) for additional travel support.

Selections are made in the first week of March each year.

Canadian Society of Exercise Physiologists (CSEP)

CSEP/SCPE Undergraduate Student Award

Terms of Reference:

1.    Name of Award
The name of the award is the CSEP/SCPE Undergraduate Student Award.
2.    Purpose of the Award
The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in academic achievement among undergraduate students.
3.    Eligibility
The award shall be offered in Canadian universities which offer an Undergraduate degree in physical education, human kinetics, or related disciplines. The recipients shall be graduating students who achieve the highest academic standing in their undergraduate class in the scientific portion of the curriculum.
4.    Selection Procedure
The CSEP/SCPE Undergraduate Award Program shall be administered through the parent university’s Student Awards Office in conjunction with the Chair of the appropriate department, school, or faculty.
5.    Format
The award will be in the form of a medallion and a citation suitable for framing.
6.    Frequency of the Award
One award shall be granted at each university. It shall be given to each recipient at an occasion deemed appropriate by the chair of the department, school, or faculty.
Athletic Therapy Scholarships

Chuck Badcock Scholarship in Athletic Therapy

*    Selected by the Departmental Awards Committee

This scholarship was established by David Stewardson and the University of Winnipeg Athletic Therapy Student Association in honour of Chuck Badcock, founding member of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association and former head therapist for the Winnipeg Jets. It will be awarded to a student who is a member in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association who registers for the third year of the Athletic Therapy program.

Conditions:

1.    Must be pursuing a first undergraduate degree unless you are moving from a three year degree to a four year degree or you are pursuing athletic therapy as a transfer student.
2.    Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the University of Winnipeg
3.    Up to 18 hours may be included in the calculation and eligibility for undergraduate awards among credits transferred in, obtained as a visiting student elsewhere, and obtained through challenge examinations.
4.    To be eligible for departmental awards, normally:
5.    in order to qualify for any departmental awards, a student MUST  be on record with the Records Office as having declared a major in the department concerned.
6.    All students must have a Grade Point Average of at least 3.00 on all courses in the Major and on the last 30 credit hours completed.

Manitoba Brain Injury Athletic Therapy Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by funds from the “Heads Up” dinner and auction sponsored jointly by the Manitoba Brain Injury Association and the University of Winnipeg Athletic Therapy Association. It will be awarded to a student who is a member in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association who registers for the third year of the Athletic Therapy program.

Conditions:

1.    Must be pursuing a first undergraduate degree unless you are moving from a three year degree to a four year degree or you are pursuing athletic therapy as a transfer student.
2.    Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the University of Winnipeg
3.    Up to 18 hours may be included in the calculation and eligibility for undergraduate awards among credits transferred in, obtained as a visiting student elsewhere, and obtained through challenge examinations.

Gord Mackie Scholarship in Athletic Therapy

This scholarship was established by the University of Winnipeg Athletic Therapy Student Association in honour of Gord Mackie, founding member of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association and former Head Therapist for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It will be awarded to a student who is a member in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association who registers for the fourth year of the Athletic Therapy program.

Conditions

1.    Must be pursuing a first undergraduate degree unless you are moving from a three year degree to a four year degree or you are pursuing athletic therapy as a transfer student.

Sam Diamond Athletic Therapy Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in honour of Sam Diamond, founder of Diamond Athletic Medical Supplies Inc., and long-time friend and supporter of amateur and professional sport in Manitoba. It is established from gifts made by Diamond Athletic Medical Supplies Inc. and the Wesmen Athletic Therapy Students Association (WATSA). It will be awarded to a student who is a member in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association who registers for the fourth year of the Athletic Therapy program.

Conditions

1.    Must be pursuing a first undergraduate degree unless you are moving from a three year degree to a four year degree or you are pursuing athletic therapy as a transfer student.
2.    Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at the University of Winnipeg

Morris Stampede Athletic Therapy Scholarship

The Morris Stampede scholarship is given out annually to a student who shows a dedication to the MATA through working ATS events and being involved in their community. 

The Morris Stampede provides a $500 scholarship. To be eligible for consideration for this award, a certification candidate:

1. Must be returning to school at one of the two CATA accredited athletic therapy programs in the province of Manitoba in the next ensuing regular academic session as a full time student.

2. Must be a member in good standing with the MATA and the CATA.

3. Must currently have a minimum 3.0 GPA

4. Must demonstrate an active commitment to the MATA via its Athletic Therapy Services program.

External Athletic Therapy Scholarships

Canadian Athletic Therapists Association Student Leadership Award

* Selected by the Departmental Awards Committee

The Canadian Athletic Therapists Association Student Leadership Award is designed to honour Athletic Therapy Certification Candidates enrolled in a CATA accredited institution who demonstrate exceptional leadership skills both in the classroom and in the community.
There will be one Certification Candidate selected per accredited institution and the winner will receive $200 to be applied to his or her membership dues for the membership year immediately following the granting of the award. This sum will be donated by the CATA and will be applied directly to the successful Certification Candidate’s account.

The recipient of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association Student Leadership Award must:
1.    be a member of the CATA who has maintained his or her status;
2.    be a member of his or her regional chapter who has maintained their status; 
3.    be a current student enrolled in a CATA accredited institution and is actively pursuing a degree in Athletic Therapy;
4.    demonstrate proven leadership qualities while enrolled in the Athletic Therapy curriculum and,
5.    demonstrate proven leadership qualities while being actively involved in the community.

This award will differ from the others offered by the CATA in that the Association committees will not be selecting the award winners. In order to recognize the institutions individually, we feel that it would be best to have each program facilitate their own process to derive a winner. The Member Services Committee will aid the institutions in the application/nomination process, as well as the selection process as needed.

Sport Medicine Council of Manitoba Scholarships

A Scholarship Fund has been established by the Sport Medicine & Science Council of Manitoba to offer financial support to students of its member groups. The Sport Medicine & Science Council of Manitoba is a non-profit organization set up to meet the needs of Manitoba athletes and would like to promote the further education of its member groups in order to better aid the athletes.

The Sport Medicine & Science Council of Manitoba provides an annual award of $500.00 to promote the achievements and to help further the education of our student member groups. The award is to be presented each year at the SMSCM Annual General Meeting by the President of the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Manitoba.

The Sport Medicine & Science Council of Manitoba Executive Committee will select the student whom:

1.    has achieved a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.5 or equivalent;

2.    continues their program in the next ensuing regular academic session;

3.    shows outstanding volunteer work related to sport medicine;

4.    displays an impressive extra curricular background related to sport medicine;

5.    displays competence and dedication to their field, including professionalism, enthusiasm and commitment.

Students cannot win this scholarship in two consecutive years. Students should fill out this scholarship application and submit with a copy of their transcripts. The application is to be sent to the Sport Medicine & Science Council of Manitoba office and the Selection Committee will select a winner.
Scholarships will be evaluated based on an established scale. Please pay attention to the total points available for each section.
