A Study Abroad experience can be a very exciting time in a students life. With careful planning and open-mindedness, it can be a rewarding experience, and a great opportunity to make new global friends! UW students can study in another country for as short a time as one month to as long as one year.
There are two options for UW Students to Study Abroad:
1) by participating in an Exchange Program with one of UW's partner institutes, or
2) by enrolling in a foreign institution as a Visiting Student on a Letter of Permission from UW
Exchange Programs
Exchange Programs offer students the opportunity to study in another university while retaining University of Winnipeg student status. Tuition is paid to UW, not the host university, and UW awards, scholarships, and student loans still apply. Students pay travel costs, health insurance, visa fees and living expenses. The International Office assists with various administrative aspects of the exchange.
In order to qualify, students must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours, have a good academic record, provide three letters of reference recommending them to the exchange program, and submit a brief, personal written statement.
An advantage to studying abroad as an Exchange student is the lower tuition costs and built-in partnership supports.
Visiting Student
UW students may choose to study at another university by taking one or more courses as a Visiting Student. Tuition fees are paid to the host university. Students pay travel costs, health insurance, visa fees, and living expenses. In addition, a "Letter of Permission" is required which ensures that the courses you take will be recognized for transfer credit once students return to UW. A "Letter of Permission" form can be obtained in the Admissions Office, First Floor of Graham Hall.
An advantage to this option is the limitless choices of countries, universities and programs students can pursue.
Information sessions on Exchange Programs and other Study Abroad opportunities will be held in late October. Each year watch for an announcement in The Uniter for details and on the University's web calendar of events.
