Health Insurance

All international students at The University of Winnipeg must purchase the Manitoba International Student Health Insurance (MISHIP) provided by the University and Great West Life. (Exception: students with valid work permits and a Manitoba Health Card.)

Students who have other health coverage will still be required to purchase the health insurance plan provided by the university.  Their existing plan may be used to supplement the university plan.

Upon course registration, the fee for Single Coverage will be added automatically to the student account. Students will be charged for the entire academic year or from the first month of study. Health insurance fees are due and payable when tuition payment is due. If you require Family Coverage of the health plan, you MUST contact the International Student Office prior to registration to complete the application form and have the fees adjusted.

Start Date                 Coverage you will be charged for:

Fall                         September 1 – August 31

Winter                     January 1 – August 31

Spring/Summer        May 1 – August 31

This policy provides benefits in Manitoba similar to those provided to Manitobans under the Provincial Health Services and Pharmacare plans (ie hospital, doctor visits, medical supplies, etc.) For costs and other information on the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan (MISHIP), visit MISHIP.

Health insurance cards will be available for pick up at the International Student Office within a month after classes start, providing you have made a complete payment of your health insurance fees. 

Students who currently have a valid work permit and have a Manitoba Health card may apply to be exempt from the International Student Health Insurance plan.  To request an exemption, you must present the International Student Office with Student Identification card, original Work Permit, and original Manitoba Health Insurance card. Fees will be adjusted according to the expiry date of the Work Permit.THIS EXEMPTION MUST BE REQUESTED AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH ACADEMIC YEAR (prior to the Tuition Payment Deadline).

UWSA Health Plan

The University of Winnipeg Student Association provides extended health care benefits under the Student's Association Health Plan. This plan covers dental, vision, medication, etc. For more detailed information visit the UWSA Health Plan desk in Riddell Hall or through the UWSA website.
