International Students

Employment

On campus

International students can work on the campus where they are studying as soon as they arrive in Canada as long as they have a valid Study Permit. At The University of Winnipeg, international students work in a variety of positions in the bookstore, cafeterias, athletic facilities, registration office and other areas of the University. They are also employed as research assistants and lab demonstrators. If you are looking for work on campus, check the University's Human Resources website on a regular basis. You should also look regularly at bulletin boards around campus. All students must be enrolled full time and maintain a satisfactory academic performance to work on campus.

Off campus work permits

ALL STUDENTS MUST MEET WITH LEE HONG, INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC ADVISOR, PRIOR TO APPLYING FOR AN OFF-CAMPUS WORK PERMIT TO REVIEW ELIGIBILITY
. Please email Lee at l.hong@uwinnipeg.ca to make an appointment and bring your original Study Permit to your meeting with her.

International students in Manitoba are eligible to apply for an Off-Campus Work Permit if they are currently enrolled in full-time studies at a post-secondary institution.

In order to be eligible, applicants must have:

  • A valid study permit and passport;
  • Completed at least six months of full-time study (at least 9 credits per term) in the past twelve months;
  • Been registered as a full-time student in the program at the time of application;
  • Achieved a Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above;
  • Maintained a C (2.0) average on each term that is assessed for your eligibility.

IMPORTANT
: Meeting these criteria does not guarantee your eligibility for Off-Campus Work Permit.
Students must continue to maintain full-time status and satisfactory academic standing to remain eligible for their Off-Campus Work Permit. Citizenship and Immigration Canada requires institutions to report students who no longer meet the program requirements.

The Off-Campus Work Permit allows international students in Manitoba to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions and 40 hours during regular scheduled breaks (For undergraduate students this would include: December break, Reading Week, Spring/Summer Term). Please note that if a student is registered as a full-time student during the Spring/Summer terms, they would be limited to working a maximum of 20 hours per week. For more information, please contact Lee Hong at  l.hong@uwinnipeg.ca
