Community Economic Development in the Era of Globalization
(SSHRC-Assisted)

Parvin Ghorayshi

The profit driven, market-based economy motivated by non-stop growth has proved to be exclusionary, undemocratic, and unsustainable.  The growing concentration of capital, the key feature of what is commonly termed as globalization, has led to unequal distribution of power, wealth, and resources at various levels of societies around the globe.  This study draws from case studies in Canada, Asia, and Latin America, and the Middle East to propose that community-based organizations are the site of democratization and development.
