Diaspora Communities:
The Case of Winnipeg (SSHRC-Assisted)

Parvin Ghorayshi

This qualitative case study is the first part of a larger project on global cities and Diaspora Communities. Inner-city Winnipeg is just now becoming home to growing numbers of Diaspora communities from all corners of the globe, whose members are seeking employment, escaping conflict or other hardships, and/or reuniting with family.

This study employs multiple methods to document the challenges and opportunities that face Diaspora communities. This study explores the ways in which Diaspora communities can and do shape our cities, economies, policies, and our institutions at local, national, and international levels.  Study findings show that these communities are a reservoir of information, knowledge and agency.

The findings in this case study will become the basis of a comparative international study on Diaspora communities in global cities.
