Urban Form And The Location Of Poverty: An International Comparative Study
Tom Carter

Geography, University of Winnipeg
Initiated by discussions between faculty at The University of Winnipeg and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, this study will examine the location of poverty in cities in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Britain, and other developed countries.
The traditional location of poverty in the North American City Model has been the inner city. There is evidence to suggest this is changing in North America and has never been the case in cities in other developed nations. Key questions include:
- where does one find poverty in cities?
- has this locational pattern changed?
- what factors are responsible for generating this pattern?
- what role has urban form and changes in this form played?
- has public policy contributed to this pattern?
Funding is currently being provided by the Canada Research Chairs Program and faculty grants at Monash University.
