Regional Migration:
A Study Of Policies And Outcomes

Tom Carter
Canada Research Chair in Urban Change and Adaptation
Geography, University of Winnipeg

Initiated by The Monash Centre for the Study of Global Movements at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, this research initiative examines policies in various countries designed to achieve a better regional distribution of immigrants and refugees within the country.

Countries that are part of the study include Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, and Britain.  New arrivals generally migrate to larger urban centres.  Most countries, either at the central or provincial/state level (or both), have policies and programs in place designed to achieve a better regional distribution of immigrants.  The objective of the research is to assess the effectiveness of these policies in influencing the distribution:

  • have they worked with or against economic forces?
  • have the various levels of government coordinated policies and programs?
  • have immigration policies been supported by policies in other sectors?
  • have policies facilitated the integration of immigrants and refugees?

The research is funded by The Monash Centre for the Study of Global Movements and the papers will be published in the International Journal of Immigration and Integration.
