UNITED Health & RecPlex
Indoor Recreational Facility
Many of the recreational facilities in the inner city are small and outdated and offer only drop-in activities. It is not a stretch to suggest that the new indoor RecPlex will change the sporting landscape in the downtown and become the 'home' of inner-city sports. The facility will provide neighbourhood youth with a world-class venue within walking distance of their homes. It will offer organized leagues, sports camps, dance and cultural activities and collaborative programs with University of Winnipeg athletes and students.
“We recognize that participating in sports in a safe and healthy environment provides critical life and teamwork skills in a young person’s life.”
-Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg
COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
UWinnipeg currently works with hundreds of inner city children, offering basketball, soccer, golf and wrestling programs under the Wesmen team umbrella. The new Recplex will allow us to expand our community programs to include many more inner city children and youth. Find out more about the Inner City Wesmen.
With a new indoor recreational facility on campus, UWinnipeg will be able to expand its Wesmen Athletics program, intramural programs for students and offer new research, teaching and employment opportunities.
UWinnipegs new Faculty of Kinesiology is proposing an Institute for Youth and Sport. The Institute will support academic research with a focus on health and sport, with particular emphasis on issues affecting inner city youth.
"With
our research and programming expertise, the University of Winnipeg,
including our new Faculty of Kinesiology, is well-situated within the
inner city to make a difference."
- Dr. David Fitzpatrick, incoming Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology, UWinnipeg
