We are also reaching out to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children and adults in our surrounding neighbourhood through an innovative Community Learning strategy that breaks down the barriers to post-secondary education and tackles the graduation gap. The University is partnering with our neighbours to create a vibrant, reflective, and relevant learning community.
In 2004, Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor, The University of Winnipeg, convened an Aboriginal Education Working Group led by First Nations and Métis faculty, staff, and students. The Working Group resulted in a holistic and comprehensive Indigenous Education Strategy and a number of distinct initiatives.
“My goal is to work with Elders and leaders to design and conceive a learning experience that reflects Indigenous cultures and traditions and provides a place that is an open door for Aboriginal Peoples. We must provide the means and the resources, the facilities and the services, to allow full expression to this vital part of our population and end too many years of discrimination and poverty.” Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, June 2004, Installation Address
Dr. Lloyd Axworthy was inducted as an honourary citizen of Sagkeeng First Nation on July 31, 2010. The honour includes a new name for Axworthy - Waapshki Pinaysee Inini - which means White Thunderbird Man.
