Indigenous Financial Aid

Shauna FontaineIndigenous studies and history student Shauna Fontaine, earned the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Scholarship (TRC).The scholarship recognizes the important work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and honours students who are residential school survivors or descendants of residential school survivors.

Fontaine’s grandfather attended a residential school in Fort Alexander, MB. “Effects on intergenerational survivors of residential schools needs to be recognized,” expressed Fontaine. “This scholarship helps bring awareness of the legacy of residential schools and the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.” Fontaine graduates this fall and is currently applying to graduate school. She wants to obtain a Master of Arts in Indigenous Governance at UWinnipeg. “Anyone interested in Indigenous Studies should consider UWinnipeg,” said Fontaine. “It’s the best place for diversity, flexibility and scholarship.

The University of Winnipeg’s Awards and Financial Aid Office administers over 20 different bursaries and graduate fellowships designed specifically for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students. As a result of robust fund raising, UWinnipeg now provides more than $3.2 million in annual scholarships and bursaries to assist students with their direct education costs. This is a 67% increase since 2004!

The Opportunity Fund is unique in Canada and our goal is to create a $10 million endowment fund that will ensure that everyone, regardless of socio-economic status has access to higher education. Since 2007, the University has been able to offer more than 1158 bursaries thanks to generous donations, and to date there are 238 Opportunity Fund graduates.

The Opportunity Fund also provides tuition credit accounts for Indigenous and inner-city youth from grades 4 to 12. The ‘earn as you learn’ approach rewards students for each year of school successfully completed, for improving their marks, and for participating in extra-curricular activities in their communities
