THE University of Winnipeg Global College kicked off its Human Rights and Social Justice conference Friday morning at the University of Winnipeg Bulman Centre.

Over 250 students, professors and concerned citizens met at the opening, which was jump-started by greetings from U of W president Lloyd Axworthy, Premier Gary Doer, MP Joy Smith, Mayor Sam Katz, Gail Asper and Paul Meyer, Canada's ambassador to the UN Council on Human Rights.

Organizers of the three-day event, which wraps up today, hope to open up current and future public forums on the issues of human rights, including the equality of women, trouble in war-torn countries and the state of indigenous peoples.
