Ambassador Paul Meyer
Canadian Ambassador to the Human Rights Council, Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations Mission
Paul Meyer was born and educated in Toronto, Canada where he graduated from the University of Toronto with a BA (1974) and a MA (1975) in Political Science. He joined the Department of External Affairs in 1975 as a Foreign Service Officer and served abroad in Oslo (1976-78), Moscow (1982-84) and Brussels (1988-92) where he was Political Counsellor in Canada’s delegation to NATO. From 1992-97, he served at the Embassy in Washington D.C. as Minister-Counsellor (Political) and from 2001-2003 as Minister and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy in Tokyo. In Ottawa, Mr. Meyer has held a variety of positions at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, primarily in the field of international security policy. He was Director-General of the International Security Bureau from 1998-2001. In July 2003, Mr. Meyer was appointed as Ambassador to the Office of the United Nations and Ambassador for Disarmament in Geneva. His responsibilities include international human rights matters and he has led Canadian delegations to three sessions of the Commission of Human Rights and to the three regular sessions and four special sessions held to date of its successor body the Council of Human Rights.
