Dr. Erin Baines
Research Director of the Conflict and Development Programme,
Liu Institute for Global Issues
Erin Baines (Ph.D. Dalhousie University) is the Research Director of the Conflict and Development Programme at the Liu Institute for Global Issues, where she has worked and written on the politics of humanitarianism, gender and armed conflict, and transitional justice.
She co-founded the Northern Uganda ‘Justice and Reconciliation Project’, which examines cultural approaches to the re-integration of former child and youth soldiers in their communities, and how such approaches contribute to a transitional justice strategy in the country.
Recent and forthcoming publications include: “The Haunting of Alice: Cultural Approaches to Justice and Reconciliation in northern Uganda,” International Journal of Transitional Justice, Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2007; Vulnerable Bodies: Gender, the UN and the Global Refugee Crisis (London: Ashgate Publishing) 2004, and “Body Politics and the Rwandan Crisis,” Third World Quarterly , 24 (3) 2003. Erin has collaborated on advocacy and multi-media initiatives, such as the documentary ‘Uganda Rising’ by Mindset Media, 2006.
Baines sits on the boards of GuluWalk, Mindset Media and the International Journal of Transitional Justice. In 2006, her work in Uganda was featured on CBC Correspondent ‘The Hard Road Home.’ From 1999 - 2004 she worked as a consultant for various UN organizations, including the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and World Food Programme.
Recent grants and awards include a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The Compton Foundation, the International Development Research Centre, a two year, interdisciplinary grant from Status of Women Canada, and the Henry Frank Guggenheim Prize on ‘The Role of the Academic in Reducing Violent Conflict.’
