Policy: Employment Equity

Purpose:

The purpose of this policy is to outline the University's commitment to employment equity and to identify the general process for the development of an employment equity plan.

Scope:

This policy applies to all employees of the University.

Responsibility:

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for the communication, administration, and interpretation of this policy. The Director is supported in this initiative by the Employment Equity Officer and the Employment Equity Advisory Committee.

Policy:

The University of Winnipeg is committed to achieve and maintain a workforce which reflects and affirms the diversity of our society, and to provide an environment characterized by mutual respect and equity.

The University, in making this commitment, has agreed to implement measures for the identification and removal of artificial barriers in the selection, hiring, career advancement and training of the following designated groups: women, aboriginal peoples, persons with disabilities and visible minorities. The University of Winnipeg recognizes that women are not a numerical minority and that persons can be members of more than one designated group.

In the development of The University of Winnipeg employment equity policy, the guidelines established by the Federal Contractors Program have been taken into consideration. In the implementation of this policy and any specific aspect of the Employment Equity Program, the intent of all relevant provincial statutes governing human rights and labour relations will be maintained. If the current collective agreements require modifications, mutually agreed changes will occur through provisions contained in the respective Agreements.

Program:

In order to achieve employment equity The University of Winnipeg will, on an ongoing basis:

  • Endeavour to ensure all human resource policies, practices and procedures affecting employment promote equity and diversity.
  • Set goals consistent with the Policy, and establish timetables and plans for achieving them.
  • Implement programs to facilitate the participation and advancement of members of the designated groups.
  • Establish procedures to monitor the progress and results. This policy applies to all employees of the University.
