Human Rights & Global Studies Recent Grad Lands International Internship

Congratulations to Nicole Ferland, a University of Winnipeg recent graduate of the Human Rights and Global Studies degree! She is one of five new Canadian graduates who received
competitive international placements though the Youth Employment
Network (YEN) at the International Labour Organization (ILO) of the
United Nations.
Nicole left for Jakarta, Indonesia on May 22, 2011.
I will be working in Jakarta on youth employment issues, which is
really important. If you have a large population of unemployed youth
they get restless, and it can lead to instability, said Ferland. It is
also a human rights issue because everyone should have access to fair
employment.
The YEN 'Associates' will be each going on a six-month placement to one of the following: Accra, Ghana; Jakarta,
Indonesia; Dakar, Senegal; Nairobi, Kenya; Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. The
Global College/ YEN program is designed to increase employment with young
professionals seeking employment in the international development field.
The International Youth Internship Program will be running in 2011,
2012, and 2013.

Thirteen graduates and undergraduates from Winnipeg will be traveling to South Africa to learn first-hand about the apartheid experience, and how reconciliation is an essential part of healing. They will be joined by six South African students who will also be taking the summer course. This course is a part of The University of Winnipeg's Global College Summer Institute courses, entitled, Post Conflict Truth, Memory and Reconciliation Field Course in South Africa.
Among the students participating in this summer course is Colin Bourrier. Colin recently completed his second year in Conflict Resolution Studies.
"[Through this field course], I have the special opportunity to discuss with and learn from both Canadian and South African Students. I am looking forward to experiencing the many levels of learning this field course offers". - Colin Bourrier.
This course also holds special meaning for Colin, whose mother was born and raised in Apartheid South Africa. It will give him the opportunity to learn about his family's past and "further [his] knowledge and growth as a person".
