The Keynote Speaker, Mr. Dan Connell, a distinguished
Lecturer, Depts. Of Communication & Political Science/International
Relations, Simmons College, Boston, is the author of numerous articles
and books, including among others Conversations with Eritrean Political
Prisoners (2004.) As a journalist and writer, Mr. Connell has published
extensively on pre and post-independence Eritrean politics and society.
Arguably, the prominent western expert on Eritrea, Mr. Dan Connell is
well-suited to shed light on the Eritrean predicament.
The Seminar will focus mainly in the event of September 18,
2001 when the Eritrean regime started massive crack-down on high-level
government ministers, journalists, and other dissidents, and shut down
the private press; thereby officially embarked on the road to tyranny.
Ten years later, the victims remain disappeared; their whereabouts
unknown.

WINNIPEG CHILD
Aboriginal & New Immigrant Youth Unite In A Live Stage Performance
About Life On The Streets Of Winnipeg
Five months ago a group of youth walked through the door of Crossing Communities Art Project to learn about Hip Hop. One day later a few were ready to fight as heated words were exchanged amongst youth from opposing gang neighbourhoods in the city of Winnipeg. But they didnt fight each other instead they focused their energy elsewhere.
During the last five months the youth continued to work together six days a week to produce a live half-hour stage performance about their lives and dreams for the first time. The performance showcases several rap songs, spoken word, dance and visual art projections about life in Peg city that is guided by mentoring artists from Winnipeg and Montreal. The youths program lyrics and art are insightful, honest and raw. The rap songs include a response to the story of an Aboriginal man being beat on New Years Eve and a Newcomers perspective on what it is like to come to Canada from Kyrgyzstan and know hunger on both sides of the sea.
The two performances highlight the talent of ten young men & women from low-income neighbourhoods in Winnipeg. The combination of voices that set the stage range in age from 14-19 years old and are from the North - West sides of Winnipeg including newcomers from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Sudan and Kyrgyzstan.

FORUM ON WOMEN, PEACE & DEVELOPMENT
An interactive discussion, with Q&A to follow
Tuesday April 21
7:00 p.m.
Location: 2M70, The University of Winnipeg
Free admission - all are welcome to attend.
Panelists : Menno Simons College Faculty
Moderator: Muriel Smith
- Anna Snyder, PhD : "Ambivalent Empowerment: Women's Refugee Organizations fostering Human Rights Awareness"
- Stephanie Strobbe, PhD (Cand.) : "Conflict & Global Sustainability: The Relationship of Lao Ethnic Minorities to Their Environment"
This forum examines the interrelationship between peace and development issues in order to understand how local people struggle to deal with conflicts, such as war, violence, poverty, exploitation, injustice, and marginalization. The Western notions of development, poverty reduction and enhancement of livelihood of people, have conflicting stakeholder interests. How does self- interest influence development work? Furthermore, some western development theory and practice are at odds with or fail to take into account local knowledge and traditional ways of life. Thus, this forum will examine how women in refugee camps in Burma experience empowerment and explore developmental issues affecting ethnic minorities and their environment in Laos. Specifically, how women and ethnic minorities see themselves in conflict? What are disempowering and empowering aspects? Do conflicts have a positive side in transforming gender and ethnic relations in refugee camps and villages?
Interactive discussion with case studies presentation (Burma, Laos) followed by Q&A. The forum will be based on interactive discussion chaired by Muriel Smith. The participants of the forum are Anna Snyder and Stephanie Stobbe faculty at the Menno Simons College in the department of Conflict Resolution at the University of Winnipeg. Anna Snyder will talk about womens experiences of empowerment in Burmese refugee camps. Stepahnie Stobbe will discuss issues related to conflict and global sustainability, the relationship of Lao ethnic minorities to their environment. Questions and comments will proceed.

....How does society's structure affect your health? Are there links between discrimination we suffer, based on ethnicity, income, and educational level, and our personal well-being?
Poet Margaret Christakos reads from her new
book, What Stirs
Thursday, October 23rd at 4:00 p.m.
Room 4M37 at the University of Winnipeg
Everyone welcome. Free admission.
In What Stirs, Christakos
looks at our primal appetite for attachment through the modern norms of
co-dependency and coexistence, understanding that the postmodern digital era
has created an atmosphere where the vulnerability and tenderness of the individual
are both profanely exposed and brazenly reinvented in the arrival of virtual
identity.
Often playful but never trifling, Christakoss work layers the ecstatic
possibilities of lyric poetry, the mundane and intimate extremes of motherhood,
and her continued curiosity with experimental poetics in a thoughtful
collection of sensual, language-focused and wonderfully aural poems.
Margaret Christakos is the award-winning author of six acclaimed poetry
collections and a novel, Charisma, short-listed for the Trillium Book Award.
She teaches creative writing and runs Influency: A Toronto Poetry Salon at
the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. Her most recent
collection, Sooner was short-listed for the Pat Lowther Award. This event is
presented by the English Department at the University of Winnipeg with
co-sponsorship by the University of Winnipeg Institute for Womens and Gender
Studies.

Event sponsored by: The Global College
VSO
Canada and Ear to the Ground Planning are pleased to announce the release of
the 27 minute collaborative film On est ensemble: Volunteering for Development
in Cameroon. The film depicts six Canadian volunteers, under the auspices of
CIDAs International Youth Internship Program, working together with national
volunteer counterparts in the Far North of Cameroon on a development project
entitled Our Schools, Our Success. The film showcases the pivotal role that the
Cameroonian volunteers play in enabling the Canadian volunteers to adapt to
working and living in a different culture. In emphasizing the links between
international cooperation and volunteering, the film raises important questions
regarding the nature of development work and cross-cultural learning, and
engages the viewer in examining their own positional vis-a-vis international
development.

Synopsis: Cuba faces an important crossroads over the next years. The foundational era of the revolutionary process is coming to an end, after 50 years under the leadership of Fidel Castro. The domestic social, economic and political context and the international environment have changed and are changing substantially. The basic challenge will be to combine the necessary continuity of the main achievements of the Revolution in the social sphere and the maintenance of its national sovereignty, while adapting its economy to the requirements of the globalized world, and transforming its political system to a more deliberative democracy.

Canada is home to over one million Indigenous people, representing hundreds of
unique histories, languages, and cultural traditions. Canada is seen as a
strong promoter of human rights in the world - but our reputation on Indigenous
rights is not as positive. Questions about Indigenous rights are being raised
all over the world as Indigenous communities have brought their struggles to
the international level. This has led to a growing international movement to
recognize and respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

When Silence is Golden follows the film*s director in her quest to lift the silence on the gold mining activities of a Canadian mining company near a small town in Western Ghana. Through her journey, we meet the inhabitants of this town who, despite efforts by the government to silence them, cannot hide their anger and are eager to express their
grievances. In seeking to explain this complex situation, the film comes face to face with the human rights implications of gold mining operations in Africa*intimidation by soldiers policing the towns to suppress growing tensions, severe contamination of water sources and the possible resettlement of these communities. This is a film about the
struggles of ordinary people who want their
voices to be heard; a portrait of a battle that many may consider as already
lost.

"Understanding the Post Modern World and Its Predicament"
With Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Director, Global College
It will be presented that today there are three types of state in the international system. While the [1] pre-modern states can be described as lawless, and the [2] modern states fiercely protective of their sovereignty, the [3] post-modern states operate on the basis of openness, mutual security and interdependence. Also, the presentation will examine the foundations of the post-modern era, the relevance of territorial borders, the relativity of state sovereignty, the assumptions underlying the change, the origin, and who of the countries of the world belong. As well, the presentation will point out some of the predicament of post-modernity.
How does the post-modern world deal with terrorism, missiles and weapons of mass destruction? How does the post-modern world safeguard peaceful co-existence throughout the civilized world? These are two of the greatest questions that face our post-modern world.
