Biography of Jan Stewart
Institute for Children Affected by War

Jan Stewart, Ph.D (Manitoba) teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in teacher and counsellor education in the Faculty of Education at The University of Winnipeg. Jan is the Director of The Institute for Children Affected by War at The Global College affiliated with the University of Winnipeg. Her research focus is on the psychosocial and educational needs of children who have been affected by war. Jan has conducted numerous seminars at national and international conferences on the needs and educational challenges of children who have been affected by conflict, violence, abuse, mental health issues, neglect, and human rights violations. She is the author of The STARS Program, University of Toronto Press (1998) and Hunter House Publishers (2005), The Tough Stuff Series Middle/High School, Jalmar Press (2002), and bestselling book, The Anger Workout Book for Teens, Jalmar Press/Pro-Ed (2002). She has also published numerous journal articles related to educational administration and school counselling. 

 

Jan was awarded a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Doctoral Fellowship (2006-2008) and The Canadian Consortium on Human Security and The Human Security Program of the Development of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Doctoral Fellowship (2006-2007). In addition, Jan is the recipient of The University of Manitoba, Faculty of Education Graduate Student Research Scholarship (2006-2007), The Duff Roblin Scholarship for academic excellence (2005), The Anthony J. Besarabowicz Scholarship for outstanding research and academic skills (2006), and The University of Manitoba Students’ Union Scholarship (2005). In 2003, Jan was the Recipient of the Margaret Woods Award from The Manitoba School Counsellors’ Association for exemplary contribution to the field of counselling, locally, provincially, and internationally.
