The Institute for International Women's Rights provides opportunities for research, learning, dialogue, and action on Women's Rights in collaboration with groups and organizations within the university, such as the Institute for Women's and Gender Studies, and in the larger community, such as the Winnipeg branch of UNIFEM.


About the Director

Marilou McPhedran is a professor in the Department of Criminal Justice who serves as the Principal (dean) of Global College. In 1997 Marilou founded the International Women's Rights Project (IWRP), which is now based at the University of Victoria Centre for Global Studies and is affiliated with Global College. Principal McPhedran is a human rights lawyer who has specialized in the exploration of "Lived Rights" and "Evidence-based Advocacy" in the application of human rights law and policy in Canada and internationally, emphasizing international, inter-disciplinary, and inter-generational dialogue.

Past Projects

Projects for 2010:

  • Working in partnership with the Global College Institute for International Women's Rights, UNIFEM Winnipeg Chapter hosts engaging and informative sessions with women's rights specialists. Keep informed on upcoming speakers and events by joining the Global College mailing list today!
  • 2010 is the 10th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security. As part of the Global College Global Citizenship program, Principal McPhedran and Dr. Dean Peachy, acting Director of the Institute for Human Rights and Global Studies, will be leading a UN Study Tour to United Nations headquarters in New York in October. Projects for 2009:

  1. Research, guest lectures, and presentations on UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1820, which focus on Women's participation in post-conflict reconstruction and the use of sexual violence as a tool of war and to undermine post-conflict reconstruction (more info).

  2. On October 7, 2009 at 6:00 pm in room 2M70 the Institute is hosting the Annual General Meeting of the Winnipeg branch of UNIFEM. The UNIFEM event is open to the public, and will include an act of solidarity as part of the UNIFEM international "Get Cross" campaign, stoprapenow.org.

  3. In cooperation with the University of Winnipeg Students Association (UWSA) there will be a joint act of solidarity at 12:30 pm on October 7, in the central "Quad" of the UofW campus, where students will be invited to participate in a large group photo to demonstrate support for the UNIFEM international "Get Cross" campaign, stoprapenow.org.
