Human Rights & Global Studies

Porcha Palmer

At The University of Winnipeg, our strong international focus and innovative thinking are longstanding priorities for teaching and development. We’re the only university in Western Canada to offer a Degree in Human Rights and Global Studies, which provides a formal structure for students interested in issues of social justice, global citizenship, and human rights. Through our Global College, we encourage students, faculty, scholars, and dignitaries from around the globe to share diverse perspectives and engage in lectures and workshops that focus on issues affecting our planet.

Winnipeg is a highly diverse, thriving, multi-cultural community, and our university attracts students from across Canada and around the world. On campus, some 500 international students represent over 50 different countries.

We also encourage students to study abroad. Our International Exchange Program allows you to complete your studies at a partnering post-secondary institution while maintaining your status at UofW. We have partnerships with a variety of institutions in places such as:

· China

· Mexico

· Germany

· Scotland

· France

· Brazil

The Global College

The Global College provides students, faculty, visiting scholars, dignitaries and the community with a place to share their diverse perspectives about issues of global citizenship, human rights, and issues affecting the planet. We are an action oriented, multi-disciplinary forum for Canadian and International students. The College brings students and community members in contact with local faculty, visiting scholars and notable speakers from around the world and engages them to discover their role within the local and global community, emphasizing both our responsibility to protect and our responsibility to act. Mine Sniffing Dog Fundraising Project

UWinnipeg staff and students have embarked on an important “pet project”, making a strong commitment to help eradicate landmines in Bosnia. The university is raising money toward the purchase and training of a mine-sniffing dog to help remove an estimated one million landmines that remain after a civil war. Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Located in Winnipeg, The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is envisioned to be the largest human rights centre in the world. It has a special focus on equipping and educating young people to become human rights leaders and advocates.

The University of Winnipeg, along with the Rotary International District 5550, are broadening the presence of the Museum by selecting and funding students from around the world to travel to Winnipeg to complete course credits in human rights and related areas through the Global College.

“A comprehensive education is key to understanding where we have been and where we are going in the evolution of human rights,” said Gail Asper, National Campaign Chair of Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. “The new University of Winnipeg BA is a perfect complement to the mission of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and strengthens Winnipeg’s growing reputation as a centre that nurtures global citizens.” – Gail Asper
