Collegiate Priorities

A Message from Dr. James D. MacDonald,
Collegiate Campaign Chair

Mission Accomplished: $5 million!

I am proud to be associated with this successful Collegiate Campaign, by far the most comprehensive fund raising initiative in The Collegiate's 138 year history.  On behalf of the University of Winnipeg Foundation, its Board and Campaign volunteers, I say a heartfelt thank you - to the alumni, faculty and staff, parents, community and business leaders, and other friends of The Collegiate who have helped to achieve this goal.  Together we have opened the door to a brighter future for the Collegiate and the students it educates.

My Collegiate experience continues to shape my life everyday. The knowledge I gained prepared me for higher education and a rewarding career. More importantly, The Collegiate showed me that treating others with respect and allowing them to take responsibility enables them to succeed.  I (and countless other Collegiate students in the past) have found our unique academic path here. I trust that generations in the future will continue to flourish in The Collegiate's atmosphere of academic challenge and respect for diversity.

The University of Winnipeg Foundation's $5 million Collegiate Campaign was established primarily to build a sustainable bursary fund. Designed to support students from lower income families, bursaries offer all aspiring students an equal chance to flourish within The Collegiate's system of freedom and challenge, regardless of their ability to pay.

Through opening the doors to education, we can - and will help to break the poverty cycle!

Bursary funding is essential at the University level.  However, there are many students who would not make it that far, without the financial support of a bursary, which would enable them to attend The Collegiate and attain the required university entrance qualifications. (85% of the Collegiate's students that graduate from Grade 12 continue on to university. This record of achievement is far above the norm found in the public school system.)

Giving back is a theme that is gradually being introduced to all past & present students of The Collegiate.  The grateful parents of many students have also been very generous in supporting the campaign.  It is with the success of this new tradition that Collegiate alumni will be able to offer even greater support to their school in the future.

With this increased support The Collegiate Alumni Association will be able to offer assistance, in many ways, to attending students for the next 138 years!

Thank you once again to all of you who have made this achievement possible.

Collegiate Priorities Going Forward

Student Awards

The Collegiate has earned the distinction for being a leader in secondary education. Here, students' commitment to learning is matched with a challenging academic program and dynamic atmosphere. To maintain its reputation, it has committed to attracting and recruiting even more bright and gifted students. These students also contribute to the quality of education at The Collegiate by adding to the diversity of the student population.

Bursaries

The Dean's Bursary Fund, and other awards based on need, provide the means many young people depend on to attend The University of Winnipeg Collegiate.  While some students do receive awards, many more need our help.

The Dean's Fund (The Dean Lorne A. Tomlinson Memorial Entrance Bursary) was established following Dean Tomlinson's death in January 1970.  Dean Tomlinson was an educator who believed in the capacity of his students to accomplish more than they imagined.  Two funds, one for bursaries and one for scholarships, were set up in his honour.  Of these, the bursary fund is now simply referred to as The Dean's Bursary Fund, and is a fund into which donors can make gifts that help deserving students reach their full potential.

Scholarships

Scholarships assist and encourage students to attend The Collegiate and reward them for achieving and maintaining top grades.  Currently, The Collegiate currently has a limited number of entrance scholarships that support students for the first year of their studies.  However, to retain students, we must increase the number of scholarships as well as provide the funding that will ensure the students can continue to receive awards in their second and third years at The Collegiate.

By rewarding outstanding achievement to students at the secondary level, The Collegiate helps to set them on a course for continued excellence and helps to set them on a path to becoming leaders in their communities and future professions.

Many donors choose to support one or more existing scholarships at The Collegiate. Other donors prefer to establish a new scholarship. This provides an opportunity for donors to help set the criteria for the award as well as to name it in recognition of an individual, family, organization or special friend of The Collegiate.

Dean's Innovation Fund

The Dean's Innovation Fund supports new initiatives and inspired projects at The Collegiate. In order to take advantage of immediate opportunities for innovation and leadership, The Collegiate must have the flexibility to move quickly. These types of initiatives are what keeps us competitive and at the forefront of academic excellence and accessibility, in an environment of critical thinking and community spirit.

Your gift to the Dean's Innovation Fund will help keep The Collegiate nimble and efficient, resulting in better student programs and innovation excellence.

Providing Space Designed for Learning

Today's students will face future challenges like no generation before them.  The competition they will face in post-secondary education and in the workplace is unprecedented.  For students like those at The Collegiate, getting by is simply not enough.  Collegiate students are driven to excel.

To prepare them for this future, The Collegiate must provide them with the tools for learning including well-equipped facilities, laboratories and classrooms that foster both discussion and discovery.

Collegiate Fundraising in this area provides support to update existing and develop new spaces that will ensure students have access to the resources they need when they need it for optimum learning.
